Every year on January 18th, people all over the country celebrate National Michigan Day. I figured it might be helpful to share some of the ways that my family and I have celebrated or plan to celebrate our love for the mitten state, despite the fact that there are many different ways to celebrate being a Michigander or the Great Lake State itself!

Business And Tune-making

In the early 20th century, Michigan was a major industrial centre. Loggers, sailors, railroaders, and automobile workers all contributed to the population boom that occurred both during and after World War II. Employment grew rapidly due to the rise of the engineering and manufacturing sectors.

Workers skilled in assembly were in high demand after Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941. The B-24 Bomber was produced at the Willow Run plant in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Michigan, the country’s automotive capital, was a natural choice for the expansion.

A worker at the Willow Run plant donned the iconic bandana and flexed her muscle to promote the purchase of war bonds as Rosie the Riveter. The actions of Rose Will Monroe and thousands of other women in Michigan and across the country altered the course of the war and altered the public’s perception of women for decades to come.

Michigan and Detroit, birthplaces of the legendary Motown sound, have also produced notable names in jazz and gospel music. The formation of Motown marked the beginning of an era that included artists such as Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross, the Jackson 5, and Stevie Wonder.

On August 3, the Great Lakes state of Michigan is celebrated nationally with National Michigan Day. Nearly 60,000 bodies of water set Michigan apart from every other state. About three thousand nautical miles of coastline, eleven thousand inland lakes, and countless acres of forest can be found here.
