This cherished breed of Scottish dog was developed in the 1800s by wealthy landowner Lord Tweedmouth, who wanted a dog that could swim long distances. He came up with the Golden Retriever by crossing a Retriever with a Tweed Water Spaniel.
However, the breed had been around for well over a century before its official day of celebration was established.
Kristen Shroyer, who founded National Golden Retriever Day in 2012, selected February 3rd because it was the birthday of her own Golden, Quincey.
Although he’s no longer alive, the day serves as a reminder of how amazing the love of a pet can be, particularly if it is a Golden Retriever.

In Scotland, The Breed Was First Developed.
In the late 1800s, Lord Tweedmouth of the Scottish Highlands was responsible for developing the Golden Retriever breed.
In 1908, a Golden Retriever was first displayed at a dog show in Britain. Later, in the early 20th century, Goldens began arriving in the United States.
In the 1970s, when President Gerald Ford was in office and his dog Liberty was a fixture at White House events, the breed skyrocketed in popularity in the United States.

Some Goldens Are Better Than Others
