Why We Celebrate National Tater Tot Day?

When March 31 rolls around, we will be celebrating National Tater Day because potatoes are awesome and we are prepared. They are delicious no matter how you prepare them—baked, boiled, fried, mashed.

Due to their adaptability, potatoes work well in both salty and sweet dishes, enhancing or complementing the other flavours in the dish.

This tubular vegetable was responsible for ending famines in both ancient and modern times. However, the vegetable has also received its share of negative press.

Germans, who were experiencing a severe food shortage, turned their noses up at the plentiful potatoes that their king had provided.

In that era, Germans looked down on it as a “lowly” food that didn’t measure up to their gourmet standards.

The best way to celebrate #NationalTaterTotDay

  • Wrap them up in a burrito.
  • Create a potato-based substitute for nachos by topping partially cooked tots with your preferred toppings and then reheating.
  • Make a dipping sauce and seasoning bar with tater tots.
  • Get some tater tots to go with that burger.
  • Bake some tater tots and use them as a topping for a homemade pizza.
  • Combining hash browns with eggs is a tasty idea.
  • Put together a kabab with meat and marinated vegetables.
  • Use the hashtag #NationalTaterTotDay to share photos and recipes on social media.

What’s the deal with Tater Tot Day?

When I think of the best holiday ever, I picture a day dedicated to honouring the people responsible for turning potatoes into tasty treats.

As a side dish, these morsels of heavenly goodness were always made from the leftover potato scraps after french fries were prepared.

But the question of how these tiny morsels became a massive snack eaten by nearly every American remains unanswered; the answer lies in hard work and dedication.

When Nephi and Golden Grigg rented a facility near the border between Oregon and Idaho in 1934, they began experimenting with frozen foods.

French fries were their main focus, and the leftover scraps and mashed potatoes from their production were fed to cows, but this action seemed pointless.

Because of this, they gave it some thought and came up with a plan to boost their productivity and profits by making better use of the resources they already have on hand.

They developed a new recipe, and it’s now available alongside their other offerings.

In 1952, they purchased the factory and incorporated as the Oregon Frozen Foods Company, which later changed its name to Ore-Ida.

Background On The Origins Of Tater Day:

In 1843, the residents of Benton, Kentucky began celebrating this day as Easy Tater Day. Original participants would close their eyes and trade sweet potato “slips” as a means of celebrating the arrival of spring.

The slips used to cultivate potatoes were known as “potato slips” by farmers at the time. One of the oldest continuously celebrated trade days in the United States began as this holiday.

Potato slips were just one of the many items bought and sold at these events, which also featured the sale of livestock, tobacco, and other farm products. This celebration has, over the years, featured vintage automobiles, marching bands, floats, clowns, and more.

Do you get a tingle of anticipation whenever your mind wanders to those teeny, tiny, rectangular shreds of potato? My certainly does! You can spend years in the kitchen experimenting with the various preparations.

For the past 400 years or so, potatoes have been one of the world’s most important crops. Did you know it’s the world’s fourth-largest crop right now?

Wow, that’s a lot of spuds! I’m aware that the potato has been used in hot potato games for thousands of years, but for the sake of argument, let’s stick to more recent times.

There is no wrong way to serve potatoes, whether they are baked, mashed, fried, boiled, or shredded and made into delicious pancakes.
