Everything We Know About Peaky Blinders’ Future: Film Adaptation & Season 7

Peaky Blinders was originally planned to air for seven seasons, with the conclusion of Tommy Shelby’s redemption arc occurring in the final season. “[Season 7] will tell a new story, where Tommy Shelby—who begins as this nihilistic, looking out exclusively for his family person—will be redeemed, and he will turn nice,” creator Steven Knight said in 2019.

Tommy gets some measure of redemption at the end of Season 6 when, in contrast to the first time we see him in Episode 1, he is riding a white horse.

However, Tommy’s atonement is only partial; the show’s final season sees him forced into an uncomfortable and presumably committed collaboration with England’s fascist party, the same year that Hitler became Führer of Germany. (Tommy sees a newspaper clipping of Oswald Mosley and Diana Freeman-1934 Mitford’s wedding, but the couple didn’t get married until 1936.)

Even though Tommy is able to witness his old life go up in flames as he rides off, he still hasn’t quite finished his ultimate act.

Churchill must prepare for the oncoming tide of fascism that is sweeping Europe and the world. Tommy, who is still a lawmaker, will not be able to rest easy until he finally gets rid of Mosley.

That requirement appears to have prompted additional Peaky Blinders. Even though Season 7 won’t be happening, we’re not through with Tommy Shelby just yet.

Peaky Blinders Season 7 Is Not Greenlit

Following the conclusion of Peaky Blinders‘ sixth season, director Steven Knight has stated that there will not be a seventh season of the show. The COVID-19 pandemic appears to be the primary factor, as Knight stated (via Radio Times):

“The original intention was to do seven series, but COVID has stolen a year from us, and we felt what would be a great idea is to, almost in place of that seventh series, is to go onto the big screen.”

covid has stolen a year from us, and we felt what would be a great idea is to, almost in place of that seventh series, is to go onto The tragic and unexpected death of Aunt Polly actress Helen McCrory is another reason why plans for Peaky Blinders season 7 have been scrapped. According to Knight,

“We just felt, also with the loss of Helen, that it all appeared to be moving towards doing what I’m calling ‘the end of the beginning.'”

Peaky Blinders’ Future Will Be A Movie

Everything points to the answer being “yes.”

Steven Knight, the creator of the series, revealed his intentions to begin filming the movie in 2023 during a discussion panel that took place during the BFI London Film Festival. Knight stated,

“I will be writing the feature film, which will both take place in and be shot in Birmingham.” And with that, it looks like we’ve reached the end of the road for Peaky Blinders as we know it.

Peaky Blinders' Future Will Be A Movie

When Steven Knight refers to “the end of Peaky Blinders,” he implies the conclusion of his role as Thomas Shelby and his own participation in the series. Although he does not like the term “spin-off,” he did indicate that there could be “related series,” even if such shows would go in a different path. Knight likes to “pass the baton.”

This refers to shows that take place in the same universe as the original series, but do not feature the original cast members.

How Peaky Blinders Season 6’s Ending Sets Up More

In the sixth season of Peaky Blinders, Tommy attempted to seal the deal on his most perilous business venture to date, which included fascists Oswald Mosley and Diana Mitford, a criminal from Boston named Jack Nelson (James Frecheville), and both President Roosevelt and Winston Churchill.

Tommy ended up sleeping with the enemy (quite literally, with Diana Mitford selling it as “the English aristocracy’s way of shaking hands”) and pushing Lizzie (Natasha O’Keeffe) to leave him.

While he promised to “change the world” (by halting the rise of fascism in the UK), Tommy also faced the consequences of climbing the social ranks: he ended up breaking his promise to “change the world.”

Tommy has arrived at a bleak spot, and despite the fact that he has eliminated a number of the dangers he faces, he will enter season 6 with a large number of adversaries who are still alive and who provide a significant risk.

At the conclusion of Peaky Blinders season 6, Tommy was given a new beginning, exonerated from his diagnosis of impending death, and relieved of his responsibilities as the head of Peaky Blinders.

But Jack Nelson is aware of his failed assassination attempts on both Shelby brothers, and Gina (Anya Taylor-Joy) will also soon become aware of her husband’s death at the hands of “the devil,” Tommy Shelby. Both of these events took place before Gina (Anya Taylor-Joy) met Jack Nelson.

How Peaky Blinders Season 6's Ending Sets Up More

Another danger for Tommy Shelby is posed by the fact that Finn has assured Duke that he will track him down and take him down.

Finally, and perhaps most crucially, Tommy has spent a significant portion of season 6 providing Churchill with information regarding his interactions with fascists in an effort to thwart Mosley’s ascent to power in Britain.

The conclusion of Season 6 did not bring an end to this predicament; rather, the season concluded with a triumphant moment for Mosley (his wedding in the presence of Adolf Hitler).

In the Peaky Blinders movie, which has invited Tom Holland to play the lead role, Tommy will have to face his formidable adversaries one more time among the devastation of World War II.

Peaky Blinders Movie Predicted Release Date

In January of 2021, Steven Knight made public the intentions for a full-length Peaky Blinders movie, however it is not expected that filming will get underway until at best the beginning of 2023.

Taking all of this into consideration, it appears that the earliest that moviegoers can anticipate seeing the film is early in the year 2024.

In addition, Knight has stated that Cillian Murphy and Paul Anderson will be reprising their roles in the film.

In addition, Sophie Rundle and Harry Kirton have dropped hints about their appearance, and it’s probably reasonable to assume that Conrad Khan will play a significant role as well (considering his increase in responsibility during the season 6 finale, as well as his unfinished business with Finn).

The conclusion of the Peaky Blinders series left a lot of unanswered questions for Tommy Shelby and his family. It is not yet certain how the story will be resolved in the movie or whether Tommy will be given an opportunity to escape the situation once and for all.
