A man who was trying to stop car thieves from breaking into a vehicle on the North Side on Wednesday night was shot and wounded by a barrage of gunfire, which has set the neighbourhood on edge.

A resident named Giuseppe Marento who was asked about his evening routine stated, “I don’t go out at night, but I do wander around the neighbourhood.”

At at 10:52 p.m., the 42-year-old cyclist was riding in the 1200 block of West Montrose Drive when, according to the police, he saw a male suspect trying to break into a vehicle.

According to the police, the bicyclist tried to confront the culprit, but the suspect pulled out a gun, shot the victim, and then fled the scene on foot.

According to the investigators, when the Good Samaritan confronted the alleged thief, the thief pulled out a gun and started fire on the bicyclist. The bicyclist was shot in the elbow, and the robber reportedly left a pickup truck riddled with bullet holes.

A woman who did not wish to provide her name stated that the pickup truck is her car for use at work.

The police reported that they saw a black Jeep Grand Cherokee speeding away from the scene as another vehicle followed closely behind it heading in an easterly direction.

There is no one under arrest. Detectives from Area Three are conducting the investigation.
