Thomas’s February 1943 birth occurred in Maryland.
Since she was a young child, she’s been interested in gadgets. At the age of eight, she borrowed a book called “The Boy’s First Book On Electronics” from the library because she was interested in doing some of the projects described in it with the help of her father.

On February 1, 1943, in Baltimore, Maryland, the world gained a brilliant scientist, mathematician, physicist, and inventor by the name of Valerie LaVerne Thomas.
Valerie’s parents were her first role models as she grew up in the historically Black Cherry Hill neighborhood.
The value of education that fosters “an inquiry-based hands-on learning environment, in the home and community” was ingrained in her by her parents.

In 1954, Myrtle Mack-Dutton, Anastasia Phillips, Alfreda Hughes, June Lee and Margery Flanagan, Ann Williams, and Ann Freda Todd integrated the black and white student bodies of the Baltimore magnet school at Howard and Centre streets with police protection.
Thomas waited three years after high school before enrolling at the university. While there, he thrived academically and developed an interest in physics, eventually graduating in 1960.
Trigonometry was a breeze after 20 minutes with Morgan State University’s famous physics chair, Julius Henry Taylor. After finishing college in 1964, Thomas found work at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) as a mathematician and data analyst.
Having worked her way up to associate chief of the Space Science Data Operations Office before retiring in 1995, she eventually left that position.
She Worked On The Orbiting Geophysical Observatory’s (OGO) Data Systems (1964–1970).
She was the GSFC team leader for the Large Area Crop Inventory Experiment, which demonstrated the viability of using Landsat data to predict global wheat yield, and she developed computer data systems to support the Orbiting Geophysical Observatory (1964–1970).
Dr. Thomas was the technical officer for a multi-year contract worth $42 million and the assistant program manager for Landsat/Nimbus at NASA Headquarters.
As the manager of the computer facilities at NASA’s National Space Science Data Center in 1985, she also oversaw the development of NASA’s wide area network, the Space Physics Analysis Network (1986–1990), which evolved into the Internet we know today.
Her knowledge of networking protocols helped with studies of Halley’s comet, the ozone hole, and a supernova.

She has written a large number of scientific studies and been awarded an honorary doctorate from Monmouth University in addition to receiving NASA’s GSFC Award of Merit (1993)
