Trump Has Entered A Not Guilty Plea On 34 Counts. See The Details On The Criminal Charges Here

On Tuesday, in a moment that has never happened before in American history, Donald Trump stood in a Manhattan courthouse to enter a not guilty plea to 34 criminal counts connected to payments meant to quiet an adult-film actress amid his 2016 presidential campaign.

Until now, no president of the United States had ever been criminally indicted. Trump, in his signature blue suit with red tie, appeared unruffled as he stood at the defence table in New York court judge Juan Merchan’s courtroom, accompanied by four attorneys.

As he raised a clinched fist even though he left Donald Tower on his way to the Nyc criminal court house, he did not address waiting photographers or the general public.

Trump travelled out of New York City following his arraignment on Tuesday and made a speech that evening at his private club in Florida, Mar-a-Lago.

As Trump attempted to dismiss the case against his character and called it “an disgrace to our country,” he rattled off a laundry list of grievances and overstated or inaccurate accusations in a rambling speech.

I never imagined this kind of thing happening in the United States. To protect our country without fear from those who would see it destroyed is the only crime I have committed.

In a highly polarised political climate, the trial of a previous president presents an unprecedented challenge to the legal system.

Trump, who is seeking the Republicans nomination for president once again, has spoken out against Hudson County District Attorney Shoshana Merchan and Manhattan County District Attorney Alvin Ferrer (D), labeling the probe into him a “witch hunt” motivated by politics.

Prosecutors asked the judge repeatedly for a speedy trial timetable so that it could begin in Jan, but Trump’s legal team claimed it was too unrealistic and proposed the following spring instead. The trial might happen right in the middle of Republican primary season.

Trump is not scheduled to show up for trial until at least Dec, but his lawyers will submit what is sure to be a long set of papers in Aug, and prosecutors will have six weeks to answer in writing. The next step would be for Merchan to schedule hearings and a trial.

Some attorneys have referred to the facts and allegations surrounding the slush fund payments as a “zombie case” because they have been around for so long without being resolved, but Bragg as well as his team of investigators spent several months looking into whether Trump disproved business records related to the payments.

In the 16-page indictment, it is alleged that Trump fraudulently altered company records and conceal $130,000 in reimbursements payment to his former attorney, Michael Carter, who’d already paid off of the aspiring actress Stephanie Clifford, better known by her stage name, Stormy Daniels.

Trump has disputed her claims that the two of them had a sexual encounter many years ago. When there is “purpose to defraud,” which includes “the intention of committing another felony or to aid or hide” a crime, falsifying corporate records in New York is a felony.

During the arraignment, Bragg told reporters that Trump’s payment to Daniels as well as at least 2 individuals to hide potentially harmful personal information were part of a larger conspiracy to circumvent New York and national election rules.

Prosecutor Christopher Conroy began Trump’s arraignment by saying, “Starting in around August of 2015, this defendant engaged with other individuals to carry out an unlawful plot to locate and hide unfavourable material that might have harmed his bid for president.”

According to the accusation, the defendant was paid $130,000 in unlawful funds by a lawyer for something like the Trump Organization.

The money was paid to keep quiet about an alleged sexual encounter between the accused and an individual actress so that it wouldn’t hurt his political career.

Bragg stated that it is a violation under state law to plot to assist a political candidate by illicit methods, and that the wiring payments violated federal campaign contribution limitations.

However the charge filings do not identify which other laws Trump is allegedly violating. He seemed to refute Trump’s and his legal team’s argument that charges are politically motivated by saying that his office regularly prosecutes instances involving the manipulation of financial documents.

“True and accurate company records are necessary worldwide, to be sure; nonetheless, they become even more necessary in Manhattan, as financial heart of the globe,” Bragg stated.

As a result, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has a long tradition of aggressively prosecuting white-collar crime. This type of fee is what keeps our white-collar jobs afloat.

Conclusion

Trump claimed that the hearing seemed to have no surprise and that the prosecution had “no case” against him in two postings published on Reality Social, a media firm he co-founded. Nothing improper was done!”
