During his time in office, he worked to advance civil rights, combat the Mafia and other forms of organized crime, and influence American policy toward Cuba.

He was elected as New York’s United States senator in November 1964. Kennedy became a powerful political figure in his own right within two years. He was a vocal opponent of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s Vietnam policy and became the face of liberal Democrats.
He put his name in the hat for president on March 16, 1968. On June 4 he won the California primary, making his total number of victories in presidential primaries five. In the early hours of June 5th, he addressed his devotees at a meeting held in the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles.

Sirhan Bishara Sirhan, a Palestinian immigrant, shot him dead as he was leaving through a kitchen corridor. At Arlington National Cemetery, Kennedy was laid to rest next to his brother John.
