Born Frederick Jay Rubin on March 10, 1963, in Long Beach, New York, he is better known as Rick Rubin. Both his father, Michael Micky, and mother, Linda, worked outside the home; Michael worked as a shoemaker and Linda as a homemaker.
His time at Long Beach High School was spent honing his guitar skills and developing his songwriting abilities. As a young man, Rubin was heavily influenced by punk and formed a funk group dubbed The Pricks with his pals.
While a senior in high school, he used the school’s four-track recorder to make Def Jam albums. He didn’t realise it at the time, but he had just founded a major record label.
History Prior To Widespread Recognition
He formed the punk band The Pricks while still an undergrad at Long Beach High School with the support of a teacher who encouraged him to participate in a band with his pals.
While in high school, Rubin started Def Jam Records using the school’s four-track recorder. Hose, a punk band he helped form, contributed a song to Def Jam’s first album, released that year. New York City punk scene regular who also toured the Midwest and California.
They shared the stage with a variety of thrash bands including Meat Puppets, Hüsker Dü, Circle Jerks, Butthole Surfers, and Minor Threat. By 1984, Rubin had become more interested in New York City’s burgeoning hip-hop movement, and the band had officially disbanded.

In an effort to better understand the intricacies of hip-hop production, Rubin became friends with Zulu Nation’s DJ Jazzy Jay. T La Rock’s “It’s Yours,” published on Def Jam, features their collaborative production. In order to get JJ Cool J’s “I Need a Beat” published, Jazzy Jay connected Rubin with Russell Simmons, a concert organiser and artist management.
While producing the first album for the metal band Slayer, “Reign in Blood,” Rubin effortlessly shifted gears from rap to rock (1986). During this time, Rubin also produced the Cult’s third album, “Electric” (1987), and directed and co-wrote the Run-DMC film, “Tougher Than Leather” (1988).
In addition to his work with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, for whom Rubin received the 2006 Producer of the Year Grammy, he has collaborated with artists whose work was released on other labels. Between 1991 and 2011, the group released six albums, for which Rubin received a total of sixteen Grammy Nominations (six wins) (2006).

A number of well-known buildings in the Los Angeles area are among Rubin’s holdings. Atop West Hollywood’s Sunset Strip, Rick purchased a gated house of 9,300 square feet in 1992 for $2 million.
The 4-bedroom Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles, mansion he bought for $785,000 is said to be haunted by its former owner. For the duration of the making of their critically acclaimed album Blood Sugar Sex Magik, the Red Hot Chili Peppers called this house home.
After that, Audioslave, Maroon 5, Linkin Park, Slipknot, The Mars Volta, and many other bands started using Rubin as their primary recording studio.
During the Woolsey Fire of 2019, two of Rick’s Malibu residences were sadly destroyed. When Rick decided to start again in October 2019, he spent $8.1 million on a new house in Malibu with a breathtaking ocean view.

For more than a decade, beginning in the late ’90s, Rick leased a house in Malibu. In 2011, he purchased his first purchase, a one-acre estate next to the 2005 rental he had been living in. He paid $2 million in 2011 to purchase the famed Shangri La.
Since its inception, Shangri La has served less as a home than a recording studio. A high-class bordello is said to have operated there in the ’50s.
A record producer bought Shangri-La in the ’70s and turned it into a recording studio. Throughout the following decade and beyond, musicians including Bonnie Raitt, Ringo Starr, Bob Dylan, and Eric Clapton all incorporated it in their music. For many weeks or months at a time, musicians would call this place home in order to create their art.
Shangri La shot to fame after being included in Martin Scorsese’s 1978 documentary The Last Waltz, which chronicled the last days of the band the Band.
Since becoming the owner, Rubin has been on an ongoing effort to improve and modernise the property. He turned Bob Dylan’s old tour bus into a relaxing hangout and preserved it. Rumor has it that he often updates his architects on his latest architectural ideas.

To maintain the studio’s and production area’s pristine appearance, his staff constantly repaints it white. Numerous contemporary artists, most notably Kanye West, have recorded albums in this studio.
