The Anticipated Release Of Past Lives Has Now Been Set
A first trailer for A24’s upcoming romance drama Past Lives has been revealed. The film stars Greta Kim (Russian Doll), Tan Yoo (Choice to Leave), & John Magaro (The Several Saints of Newark), and it had its global debut at the Sundance International Film Festival to wonderful reviews.
A childhood friendship between Nora (Lee) & Hae Sang (Yoo) is torn apart when Nora’s family moves from South Korea to the United States in Celina Song’s first movie, which Song also wrote and directed.
Nora, now married, and Hae Sung, still single, spend one final week together in New York City, where they must face their shared and unique beliefs about fate, love, and the decisions that shape a life.
During an interview at Deadline’s Sundance Studio last month, Song said that her own experiences as someone who “exists in,” “is able to understand,” and “is loved” in two completely different worlds served as inspiration for Past Lives.
“I literally found myself sitting amongst my longtime boyfriend from Korean, who just speaks Korean, and my spouse, who only speaks English,” she said.
“As I sat there, I realised that I am bilingual and bicultural; I can communicate and relate to both men; and I sense that both men find me attractive. That, for me, was the first scene of the film.
No specific date has been set for the release of Past Lives; all promotional materials just mention “coming 2023.” The film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and screened at Sundance 2023 in January. Wherever it has been shown so far, audiences have responded enthusiastically.

There’s a complication for Nora and Hae Sung: Nora’s husband, Arthur, played by John Magaro.

The couple’s decades-long connection serves as the narrative’s emotional anchor. In this part, Lee, 39, whose are most famous for playing Maxine in “Russian Doll,” stars as Nora. Teo Yoo, 41, a South Korean actor known for his performance as Viktor Tsoi inside the musical film “Leto,” plays Hae Sung, her best friend since childhood.
However, Nora’s family relocation from Seoul to Canada puts a halt to their blossoming friendship and budding romance. The two people lose touch for 12 years, then find each other again on social media, but it’s another 12 years before they finally meet up again. Nora is already married to someone else by that time.
The film “Previous Lives,” which premiered last month at the Sundance Film Festival and was just shown at the film festival in Berlin, has been met with universally positive reviews.
