Despite a controlled discharge of a poisonous chemical from cars involved in the train disaster in East Palestine, Ohio, three days ago, residents still cannot return home, Mayor Trent Conaway stated during a news conference Monday evening.
After 4:30 p.m. ET, a crew from Norfolk Southern began draining five rail cars of vinyl chloride, a substance that officials feared was dangerous and may explode.
Norfolk Southern employee Scott Deutsch has previously mentioned that shaped charges will be used to create a small crack in each train car. After the vinyl chloride overflowed into a trench, flares would be used to burn it off.
Deutsch reported during the news conference that the fire was contained by 7 p.m. and that a tiny fire was still burning in the pit.
The mayor has requested that residents “stay out” since “it is still an ongoing incident.” We can’t do anything till the flames are extinguished.

Conaway reiterated that the 1-mile exclusion zone around the derailed train had not been lifted. He also mentioned that the area will undergo another evaluation by authorities on Tuesday morning. He remarked, “We have absolutely no time period right now” for something like the return of inhabitants.
The Agency for Environmental Protection has promised to send a team to the area to keep an eye on the air and water quality.
The leftover fires will be extinguished on themselves own as well as won’t be quenched by personnel, Deutsch said.
An official with the Columbiana District Emergency Management Agency and a representative from Norfolk Southern told CNN earlier on Monday that one cargo train in particular had been the source of worry due to faulty safety valves that had stopped the car from discharging the vinyl chloride within.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced that two states will need to evacuate in preparation for the controlled release of the flammable materials.
East Palestine is a small village of around 5,000 people located in eastern Ohio close to the state of Pennsylvania’s border, and its governor, Josh Shapiro, had reportedly ordered the evacuation of a 1-mile by 2-mile region surrounding the town.

According to Whiting, a resident of East Palestine, he and his family of five (wife and three children) left everything behind when they departed on Friday.

Inhaling Lethal Concentrations Of A Chemical Can Be Fatal
On Sunday, authorities noticed a “drastic change” in the vinyl chloride levels, according to Fire Chief Keith Drabick.
The Ohio Department of Environmental Health warns that inhaling vinyl chloride at high concentrations can be fatal if the victim does not immediately receive fresh air.
PVC is created from a man-made chemical that is highly flammable at room temperature, is associated with a higher risk of cancer inside the liver, brain, lungs, and blood, and can make people feel drowsy, lightheaded, and lightheaded.
The National Cancer Institute warns that “if a water supply is compromised, vinyl chloride might permeate household air” because when water is being utilized for shower, cooking, or doing laundry.
