Miss Scarlett And The Duke, Season 3: The 3rd Episode Recap!

Even if you generally enjoy a TV show, there may be an episode each and every now and then that really gets on your nerves. It’s not that you don’t like the episode; it’s just that you had a hard time watching it because of the way the story was told.

One of these episodes is Season 3 Episode 2 of Miss Scarlet & the Duke. The episode itself is fine, but it plays a less than stellar role in the season’s overarching narrative.

Eliza Scarlet’s (Kate Phillips) self-assurance has always been one of her greatest strengths. She has always been confident in her skills as a private investigator, but has had to work hard to show it to others.

Specifically to the Duke of Wellington William (Stuart Martin). His insight is more valuable than anybody else’s because of his status as her lifelong friend as well as a Senior Inspector at Scotland Yard. Eliza thinks she is a competent detective, but her eagerness to accomplish the job done sometimes make her irresponsible.

To me, this has always sounded like nothing more than a confident understanding of one’s own value. The third season premiere showed Eliza making a bad decision by trusting someone she shouldn’t have. Her confidence in her abilities was unaffected by this setback.

You Are Unique And Different From Others. And For That, I Am Grateful

At the start of the episode, Eliza & William are getting ready to go out to a nice restaurant for dinner. They’ve even started referring to each other as “husband” and “wife.” Viewers are aware that they are in disguise, but that squealing you hear is just shippers’ delight.

Eliza and William have come to the restaurant in an attempt to learn more about a string of recent gem thefts that may be related to the establishment. However, a difficulty has arisen. When Eliza and the restaurant’s owner were both in elementary school, the owner was a bully.

The young and lovely widow Arabella (Sophie Robertson) pretends to have no knowledge of the jewel heists. The truth is lost on Eliza. Arabella, meantime, seems to have changed from her previous mean-girl ways.

And William is of the opinion that Eliza is letting her emotions cloud her judgement. One of Arabella’s employees ended up being the thief, using glass from his native Italy to make replicas that were so convincing that they were purchased by various pawn shops.

Arabella duped this worker into selling her jewellery so she could get replacements. Her eatery is losing money, although she has nothing to do with the crimes.

I, Too, Am Sometimes Guilty Of Pride, As Are Everyone Else

Despite the fact that Arabella is not a criminal, the readers are not expected to sympathise with her. In my opinion, she has far too much charisma, since she manages to win over everyone she meets.

It’s hard for me to believe that she’s being honest with me. This is very off-putting.

The character’s role is rather simplistic, however. As Eliza persisted in accusing Arabella, I cringed as her proof was repeatedly refuted. It was just so stereotypical of “TV writing,” if that’s even a thing. The show’s situations and tensions have never been so formulaic.

The writers’ decision to make Eliza’s enemy someone who preys on her fears shows a striking lack of originality. Arabella brings up a time when Eliza burned a Victoria carrot cake in class, and later in the episode, Eliza tries to bake one.

Viewers have always known that Eliza’s talents do not lay in the realm of domesticity, and Eliza herself has never hidden the fact that she does not excel in this area.

This scene exemplifies the fact that the kind of anxiety being depicted here is not the compelling kind, which is considerably less common than TV writers would have you believe, but the filler variety.

Arabella, as a finishing touch, offers the typical weak justification bullies offer for their behaviour: envy. Sure, everyone has someone or something they secretly covet, but not everyone with envious thoughts becomes a bully.

It’s Like You’re Playing With My Emotions Here… It’s Not Going To Get To Me

Eliza and William shippers have a mixed blessing to look to during this episode, including the undercover “date.” Eliza’s mother’s brooch gets taken when she is trying to lure the jewel thieves out of hiding. William takes care that she receives it again. This is a very touching moment.

However, we have to hear him remark multiple times that she is getting too upset over this case. Eliza is not entirely wrong, despite the fact that she forms her judgments about Arabella before the trial even begins.

Arabella had something to hide, but it wasn’t unlawful. The fact that we have to go through a few of steamy looks exchanged between William & Arabella is even worse.

The significance of William and Eliza’s connection is emphasised in the episode’s last scene. Thanks to the guidance of her trusted servant Ivy (Cathy Belton), Eliza makes a delicious Victoria sponge cake, which she proudly serves to William. However, she does caution him that this represents extent of her domestic prowess.

But obviously you intend to have a household of your own someday to care for, right?” he asks. Nonetheless, Eliza is unwilling to discuss this issue.

Arabella arrives with a spread of restaurant specialties, and suddenly Eliza feels overlooked and left out. Miss Scarlet & the Duke 302 ends on a tragic note. I have to question if the writers gave much thought to the season as a whole.
