One of north India’s most well-attended celebrations, Lohri, is coming up soon. This event celebrates the conclusion of the winter solstice and the reaping of the rabi crops and is observed mostly by Sikhs and Hindus. As the days become longer and the weather warms up, many people enjoy gathering around a bonfire to sing and dance in their colourful traditional garb.

Some accounts suggest that the word Lohri was derived from the word “loh,” which refers to a large iron griddle or tava used to cook chapattis during communal celebrations. Another legend has it that reformer Kabir Das’s wife, “Loi,” is where the term first appeared in use.

The History Of Lohri

The event can be traced back to the story of Dulla Bhatti, a legendary hero of Punjab who led an uprising against the Mughal ruler Akbar. Almost every Lohri song includes lines that pay tribute to him for becoming a hero in Punjab because of his valiant deeds.

Lohri is a popular harvest festival in North India and is celebrated as a traditional winter folk celebration on the evening before Makar Sankranti. The celebration marks the end of the winter solstice and the beginning of longer days as the sun returns to the northern hemisphere.

Lohri is also celebrated because the sun enters the zodiac sign of Makara (Capricorn) on this day, which is seen as a good omen because it represents a new beginning. Some legends say that the colder winters in the Himalayan mountains were the inspiration for the event.

The legendary figure “Dulla Bhatti,” a saviour of the Punjabi people during the time of the Mughal Emperor Akbar who stole from the wealthy to give to the needy, is credited with inspiring the festival of Lohri. He famously prevented a group of girls from being sold into slavery.

Preparing For Lohri 2023

After the rabi crops have been harvested, a massive bonfire is lit in the backyard as part of the Lohri celebration. Cattle dung is used to mould miniature statues of the Lohri deity, which are then placed in the fire.

At sundown, a bonfire is lit, and participants in traditional garb gather around it to toss items like sesame seeds, jaggery, and rewaries into the flames. People gather around a fire and party until the flames go out.

They hope that the fire deity will hear their prayers and bestow his blessings on their country. Afterwards, friends and family members greet one another and present one another with gifts.

Sugarcane goods like gajak and jaggery are a big component of Lohri celebrations because they are manufactured from the crops that are harvested in the month of January.
