National Rubber Ducky Day, January 13, 2023: Images And Some Information On This Baffling Holiday!

Yes, you are the rubber ducky. Because of you, taking a bath is a joyful experience. Ernie from Sesame Street once sang, “Rubber ducky, I’m awfully fond of you!” On January 13, Americans all over showed their love for the rubber ducky in a way that went beyond the lovable puppet. When or where rubber ducks originally made their debut is unknown.

But everyone has at least heard of them, whether from their own childhood baths or Ernie’s song in The Muppet Show. Rubber Duckie Day is meant to bring back memories of this important part of our daily hygiene routines from when we were kids.

A Look Back At Rubber Ducks

The first rubber duckies appeared prior to World War I and were fashioned into a wide variety of animals. However, their precise origins have been lost in the mists of time. The rubber ducky was only one of many popular types.

Rubber was a scarce resource during the World Wars, and so manufacturers switched to plastic and vinyl for toys.

One of the most iconic types of these toys is the water swan, and Landon Smart Lawrence was the first to patent a design for it. His design was the first to include a weight so that the swan would float upright no matter which way the water was flowing.

Even though the patent included a wide range of toys, it was the duck that ended up being incorporated into the final product. Rubber duckies are also among the exclusive group of 53 toys that were inducted into the Toy Hall of Fame when it was founded in 2013.

Numerous iterations of the classic plaything have been produced over the years. The rubber duck was first created in the 1800s, when the rubber industry was just getting started, but rubber was in short supply throughout both world wars, so the toy was instead mass-produced out of plastic and vinyl.

When Landon Smart Lawrence first invented his rubber ducky in 1928, he made it with a weight inside to ensure that it would stand upright no matter how you played with it.

You never know when you’ll see a rubber ducky at sea. In 1992, a storm on the way to Washington caused 28,000 rubber ducks to wash ashore.

Many believe the ducks floated all the way to the Arctic, became frozen in the ice, and eventually thawed out into the Atlantic. There are still hundreds in the wild, and they frequently wash up on coasts all around the globe.
