In Poland, we honour the most seasoned, modest, and joyful male figure in our lives on January 22nd, Grandfather’s Day. There is a special bond between grandparents and their grandchildren because of the carefree nature of grandparenthood, when the rules and discipline of parenting are softened and an adult develops a sense of childlike wonder.
Polish people have a deep appreciation for their grandfathers and grandmothers because of the positive values they instilled in them.
Grandparents Day History
Nine-year-old Russell Capper wrote to President Nixon in 1969 to propose that a special day be set aside to honour elders. The President’s Personal Secretary, Rose Mary Woods, replied to his letter on June 12, 1969, writing, “Dear Russell, We appreciate your writing President Nixon.
While we value your suggestion of a Grandparent’s Day, the President typically only issues proclamations designating periods for special observance when specifically authorised to do so by a resolution passed by Congress. Best regards, Sincerely, Title: “Presidential Secretary, Rose Mary Woods”
As a direct result of this letter, both the United States Senate and President Jimmy Carter officially recognised Marian McQuade as the originator of National Grandparents Day. McQuade hoped to teach today’s youth about the invaluable experiences and wisdom of our ancestors.
She suggested the youngsters “adopt” a grandparent to gain insight into their experiences and hopes for the future.

In 1977
Senator Randolph co-introduced a joint resolution in the Senate asking the President to “issue annually a proclamation designating the first Sunday in September after Labor Day of each year as ‘National Grandparents’ Day.
With the passage of this law, Congress officially established the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation on August 3, 1978, and the first official observance of the day was held the following year.
Presents And Celebrations For Grandparents’ Day
In general, grandparents just want to spend time with their grandkids. Ask a grandparent to demonstrate a skill they’re particularly good at. Learn something useful from your elders, like fishing.
They could also be fans of nature excursions and garden strolls. If your grandparent wants a quiet day in, suggest watching one of their old movies.
Or you could try your hand at some group craft projects. From hollyhock flower dolls to an autumn nut wreath, there are plenty of seasonal crafts to try.
Perhaps you could bring them some of the delicious baked goods that their talented grandparents have made, such as Grandpa’s Banana Bread or Grandmother’s Blueberry Cake. You could also prepare one of the dishes that your grandma or grandpa frequently serves you.

Lessons Learned From Our Grandparents’ Generation
There are many types of grandparents: biological, adoptive, and step-grandparents all share the honour of being called “grandparent.” One thing that unites these grandparents is the pride they take in being able to provide for their grandchildren.
We honour and thank our grandparents for all they do for us, especially when it comes to our upbringing and development as young adults, by dedicating a special day to them each year: Grandparents’ Day. Arnold founded the Frank and Barbara Broyles Foundation in honour of her grandmother, Barbara Broyles, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and passed away. Arnold serves as the foundation’s chief operating officer. According to Arnold, this “inspired [her] family to start the Broyles Foundation as a resource for carers, both family and professional, across the U.S.”
However, the absence of a commercial focus on the holiday does not preclude gift giving. In fact, according to Spruce.com, grandparents should buy their grandchildren presents, with an emphasis on those that “honour family traditions.”
