Blonde brownies are delicious when topped with white chocolate, chocolate chips, nuts, toffee, or butterscotch, but these toppings aren’t as popular as white chocolate or chocolate itself.

In most cases, the sweetness of the brown sugar in blonde brownies is sufficient to negate the need for additional sweetener. Sundaes made with these blondies and caramel sauce are a common dessert option.

National Blonde Brownie Day: A Bit of History

The history of the brownie is murky, with some versions dating all the way back to 1893. According to legend, the chocolaty bar was invented in 1893 by the chefs at the Palmer House Hotel in Chicago as a souvenir for guests attending the World’s Columbian Exposition.

According to a different legend, Fannie Farmer’s brownie recipe first appeared in a Boston cookbook in 1896. But because there was no chocolate in the original recipe, the result was a blondie.

Despite the fact that most brownie cookbooks and recipes are rather hazy, this dessert began to rapidly proliferate at the turn of the twentieth century. Blonde brownies, the inspiration for today’s festivities, can be found in the 1906 edition of Fannie’s Boston Cookbook.

It has been suggested that the blondie predates the brownie by at least ten years, making it the first cookie bar ever created.

What, then, distinguishes blonde brownies (also known as “blondies”) from their more conventional counterparts? While the basic ingredients and baking process are similar, blondies use significantly more flour and brown sugar in place of cocoa to achieve a more butterscotch flavour. In the 1940s and 1950s, when chocolate brownies were already common, this variation began to gain popularity as an alternative.

Blonde brownies can be enjoyed as-is, but they also lend themselves well to being flavoured with anything from vanilla to butterscotch to coconut to nuts to toffee, or any other flavour that complements brown sugar. As a matter of fact, these sweets are extremely malleable, perhaps even more so than their chocolate counterparts.

Whatever the case, let this day serve as a tribute to the underrated but undeniably delectable blonde brownie. This calls for a party, so get ready to throw one!
