The Conservatorship Case Involving Britney Spears

As pop diva Britney Spears gave a heartbreaking picture of the previous 13 decades of her existence in a scathing deposition before Los Angeles circuit judge Brenda Parker in June, the acrimonious dispute over her conservator entered a new chapter.

James “Jamie” Spears, Britney’s biological father, has served as conservator since 2008.

After a troubled 2008 that culminated in an involuntary psychiatric hold under section 5150, Spears’ career has been put back on track by the conservatorship, with the singer releasing hit albums, touring the world, and even starring in a Las Vegas residency.

Spears said that her dad and others hired to manage her career and life drove her to work nonstop, and she even compared her regimen of working nonstop seven days a week with no days off to sex trafficking.

According to recently discovered court records, Ms. Spears expressed doubts about his suitability for the position. Ms. Spears’ court-appointed attorney, Samuel D. Ingham III, said in a 2014 closed session that she wanted to investigate replacing her father as guardian, citing his drinking as one of a “shopping list” of issues.

Mr. Ingham said before a judge last year that Ms. Spears was “afraid of her father,” who still manages her almost $60 million fortune.

Ms. Spears has requested an accelerated hearing and will be addressing the L.a. court personally on Wednesday. Her connection with her dad is expected to serve as the focal point of her statements, however whether or not they will be made public is unknown.

Mr. Spears’s (then-68) representatives stayed mum, citing an upcoming court date as the reason. Nonetheless, they have stated in the past that Mr. Spears was a loving and responsible father and that the conservatorship was essential to safeguard Ms. Spears against exploitation and damage.

Vivian Lee Thoreen, an attorney defending Mr Spears, said in a statement to Folks back this year, “Any time Britney wishes to stop her guardianship, she can call her attorney to submit an application to end it; she was given this power but in thirteen years never has exercised it.”

Conservatorship or not, “Britney understands that my Father loves her, that that he’s going to be there whenever so if she wants him, just like he always has.”

The conservatorship struggle, as evidenced by the court documents, has deep historical roots in the family’s dysfunction.

Debbie Sanders Crosse, Mr. Spears’ first wife and a friend to this day, has commented on how his “very traumatic upbringing” has coloured his outlook. That’s why, she concluded, he’s attempting to act so protectively around Britney.

Mr. Spears grew up and played quarterback for the Kentwood High School football team in the small Louisiana town of Kentwood. His boilermaker father was quite demanding and stern. Mr. Spears’s former coach, Elton Shaw, observed, “His daddy was so rough on him, but James loved them and respected him.”

Early in Mr. Spears’ life, he experienced tragedy: In accordance with the local press, Mr. Spears’ mother committed suicide at the graves of her young son when he was 13 years old.

Mr. Spears’s football teammate passed away in an automobile crash that Mr. Spears survived four years later. A news article states that he was arrested at the age of 22 for narcotics possession and DUI.

His new wife and Britney’s mother, Lynne Spears, requested a restraining order against him in 1980 when she filed for divorce, claiming that she was afraid he would “become angry after being served with these papers” and harass or harm her, “especially if he had been having a drink alcoholic drinks, as he has did in the past.”

The family has asserted that despite the fact that the marriage reconciled, Ms. Spears’ childhood was plagued by Mr. Spears’ mental instability. Lynne wrote about years of “verbal abuse,” “abandonment,” and “erratic behaviour” in her memoir published in 2008.

She Was Doubting Her Father’s Authority

Ms. Spears’s concerns because her father was not the right person to be making and enforcing the rules for her life are documented in sealed court documents.

Cast and crew members were reportedly banned from drinking alcohol or energy drinks anywhere near Ms. Spears during her debut tour while under conservatorship, The Ring Starring Britney Spears.

A former babysitter and housekeeper for Ms. Spears alleged in a legal letter sent in 2010 that Mr. Spears had engaged in “verbal abuse, tirades, inappropriate behaviour, and drunken relapses” during this time.

According to a record from a 2014 closed session, Mr. Ingham stated to the judge that Ms. Spears thought her father was drinking. Conservatorship attorneys stated that Mr. Spears has freely submitted to and passed all of his random alcohol testing.

The attorney for Mr. Spears stated that his client completed one random test but would not take any more because he felt it was inappropriate.

At The Back Of The Curtain

Ms. Spears has performed over 50 times at Las Vegas and has released her ninth studio album in 2016. Probate investigator reports that she was publicly supporting the conservatorship but privately rejecting it. Ms. Britney told the detective she was “extremely angry” about the manner her life was just being managed, and she detailed the constant protection she was afforded.

According to the story, she was also subjected to random drug testing on a weekly basis, and her security detail or assistant had access to her credit card.

Ms. Spears told the investigator that she was interested in making cosmetic modifications to her home, such as restaining the kitchen cabinets, but that her father forbade her because she was spending too much money.

Ms. Spears’ personal struggles were not reflected in her public persona. Her Instagram made her seem friendly and fun, and in February 2019 she was set to star in a lucrative new show in Las Vegas.

The residency was cancelled a month before it was set to begin when Ms. Spears declared a “indefinite work hiatus.” A statement mentioned their “extremely special bond” and how Mr. Spears “nearly died” from a burst colon.

Ms. Spears made an appearance and read out a statement at a private hearing in the spring of that year. She allegedly claimed in a transcript that she was sent to a mental institution against her will for fabricated reasons as retaliation for raising an issue during a dress rehearsal.

Conclusion

The home where Britney Spears was raised was recently sold by her father. On the edge of town, down a twisting country road, he has been parking his RV at the storage facility that houses his daughter’s megawatt career memorabilia.
