Accusations Of A Hazardous Work Atmosphere And The Ellen Degeneres Issue

By spreading goodwill and doing generous things for others, Ellen DeGeneres has developed a global, multimillion-dollar brand. But current and former staffers on her top daytime show claim they were subjected to prejudice, terror, and intimidation behind the scenes.

This “be friendly” nonsense only occurs whenever the cameras are rolling. According to one former worker quoted by BuzzFeed News, it’s all an act. I’m aware that they aid those in need financially, but I believe that it’s all for show.

One current and ten former staffers of the Emmy-winning NBC daytime talk programme spoke to BuzzFeed News, but all requested anonymity out of fear for their careers and the reputations of those associated with the entertainment business.

They claimed that they had been let go after taking time off for illness or death in the family. One worker practically quit after she says she was harassed because of her race.

Several employees claimed they had been told by their superiors to avoid interacting with DeGeneres if they encountered her in the workplace.

The Action Finally Starts Now

One former employee remarked that, ultimately, it is Ellen’s name on the programme and that “she really needs to be more accountable for the poisonous workplace climate, despite the fact that most former workers blamed executive producers as well as other top management for the day-to-day toxicity.

‘If she want to have her identity on the programme title, she has to get more engaged in knowing what’s going on,’ claimed one former employee. It’s her obligation to go above and beyond what the executive producers tell her are the “things going fantastic, everybody’s happy.”

Ed Glavin, Mary Connolly, and Andy Lassner, the show’s executive producers, said in a letter to BuzzFeed News that they take the employees’ experiences “extremely seriously.”

We have worked hard over the span of almost two decades, over three thousand episodes, and with over one thousand employees to foster a welcoming and supportive workplace for everybody.

“It goes against everything Ellen has asked of us and everything we aspire to be. As a matter of public record, we are solely responsible for the operation of the Ellen show.

We take this seriously and have come to the same conclusion that many others throughout the world have: we can and must do better.

In This Instance, Justice Must Be Served

A former employee of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, a Black woman, told BuzzFeed News that during her one-year and a half there, she was subjected to racial words, behaviours, and “microaggressions.”

She revealed that a high-ranking producer commented on her and other Black employee’s similar hairstyles during the hiring process, saying, “Oh wow, guys both have braids; I pray we don’t get you confused.”

She also said that one of the key authors had said to her at a staff party, “I’m sorry, I only recognize a few of the white folks who work here,” and that no one had defended her.

The former employee was dubbed “the PC police” by her coworkers after she brought up concerns of race and diversity on the show and advised editors not to use derogatory terminology like “spirit animal” in segments.

She claimed that her coworkers abandoned her when she began speaking out against the prejudice.

She explained that whenever she discussed a problem with her white male supervisor, he would tell a tale about a Black friend of his and how they had overcome adversity. “Yet it was all bunch of theatrical hogwash.

The Shocking Conclusion That Shocked The World

She had worked in television for ten years before requesting an increase in salary after only a year at Ellen because she had heard that a new hire made twice as much doing the same job. Her supervisor assured her that “they’d see what they might do,” but months passed with no results, she claimed.

The former worker claims that she objected to the term “spirit animal,” demanded a raise, and suggested that the show’s staff attend diversity and inclusion training, all of which led to a session with executive producer Edward Glavin where she was scolded.

She left for the day after the meeting and never came back to The Show with Ellen DeGeneres. She claims she will never work in show business again. She had “a dread of speaking out” for a long time, but recent discussions about racism in Hollywood and other professions have prompted her to come up about her own experience.

It’s nice to know I’m not alone,” she remarked. “This is how we all feel. We’ve been feeling the same way, but I’ve been too terrified to speak up because of the consequences associated with speaking up as a person of colour. You’re on the no-fly list.

She declared, “I am outraged about the manner I was treated, and I will always stand up with Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and Asian people, irrespective of whether they are around.” “I can’t keep quiet any longer. I won’t be quiet for a second.

Conclusion

The ex-worker added that her manager at Ellen had recently contacted her in the midst of the Black Lives Matter demonstrations to express regret for the role she had played as an ally. Yet, the ex-worker argued that it is too much, too late.
