Ukraine Says It Shoots Down All Drones In Third Straight Night Of Strikes ‘Massive Blow’ In Makiivka

After Moscow launched unprecedented air raids against civilian sites for a third straight night, expanding its air war for the New Year holiday, Ukraine stated on Monday that it had shot down all Russian drones in a tremendous wave of attacks.

Meanwhile, Russian officials were in disbelief after hearing claims that a large number of Russian servicemen had been killed in a hit on a dormitory where they were being kept in occupied Ukraine alongside an ammo dump. Blogger for a nationalist group in Kyiv and Russia.

Nightly attacks on Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, hundreds of kilometres from the front lines, are how Russia rang in the new year. After months in which Moscow routinely spaced such strikes at a weekly interval, this represents a shift in strategy.

After suffering devastating defeats on the battlefield in the second half of 2022, Russia, which has occupied and claims to have annexed roughly a fifth of Ukraine, has resorted to widespread air raids against Ukrainian cities.

It claims that the attacks that have left millions without heat and power this winter are an effort to weaken Kyiv’s defenses. According to Ukraine, these attacks are a form of war crime because they have no military purpose and are only meant to do harm to civilians.

Nightly attacks on Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, hundreds of kilometres from the front lines, are how Russia rang in the new year. After months in which Moscow routinely spaced such strikes at a weekly interval, this represents a shift in strategy.

Russia launched dozens of Shahed drones, which were manufactured in Iran, on January 1 and 2, following the firing of hundreds of missiles on December 31. On Monday, however, Kyiv claimed success in shooting down all 39 drones that had been sent in a recent wave.

Since Ukraine has enhanced its capabilities to protect its air space, Kyiv claims that Russia’s new strategy is a symptom of its desperation.

Presidential chief of staff Andriy Yermak claimed on Telegram that Russia had been trying to destroy Ukraine’s energy infrastructure for months but had failed as Ukraine has gotten superior defences.

“They’re scrambling to find a way to strike us now, but their terror tactics will fail. Heavens above us will become a protective barrier.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy lauded his country’s citizens for their acts of gratitude toward the armed forces and one another, while predicting that Russia’s intervention will be fruitless.

They (the Russians) will not be helped by drones, missiles, or anything else,” he stated. “For the simple reason that we are solid as one. Just a shared terror brings them together.”

Air defence systems in Ukraine spent all night shooting down drones and alerting nearby towns to the impending threat.

Oleksiy Kuleba, the governor of Kyiv, has stated that the sound of “night drone strikes” can be heard throughout the city and the surrounding area.

‘Massive Blow’ In Makiivka

On Monday, Russian nationalist war bloggers were seething with indignation over tales of numerous casualties of soldiers held in a dormitory near munitions at a former vocational school in Makiivka, the twin city of the regional capital Donetsk in Russian-occupied east Ukraine.

Video of a massive building crushed to smouldering rubble was released online, but its authenticity could not be confirmed.

A top Russian-installed official in Moscow-controlled areas of the Donetsk region, named Daniil Bezsonov, said that American-made rockets had dealt a “major blow” to the building shortly after the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve. Early indications indicated that it was being utilised as a staff residence, he added.

Bezsonov remarked on the Telegram chat service, “There were dead and wounded, the precise number is yet unknown.” The structure itself suffered severe damage.

The Russian state news agency TASS reported at least 15 casualties. Defense officials in Ukraine estimated that 400 Russians perished due to “careless handling of heating systems.”

Igor Girkin, who served as a leader of pro-Russian troops in east Ukraine and is now one of the most prominent Russian nationalist military bloggers, has also claimed that hundreds of people had been killed. When the barracks were attacked, the ammunition stored there went off.
