It is widely believed that stock car racing got its start during the United States’ Prohibition era (1919–1933), when bootleggers adjusted and changed regular passenger vehicles to make them faster so they could use them to smuggle alcohol.

Later, people raced them for fun, especially in the southeastern United States, where auto racing has always been a favorite pastime. Auto racing

Automobile racing, commonly known as motor racing, is a motor vehicle activity enjoyed by both professionals and amateurs around the world. There are many other types of motorsports, such as the Grand Prix, speedway racing, stock car racing, sports car racing, drag racing, midget car racing, karting, and trials (see hill climb; see also rally driving; gymkhana). The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) is the most prominent international organization that organizes and regulates racing on a global scale.

A Brief Overview Of The Past

During the 1880s, when the first gasoline (petrol) powered internal combustion engines were developed, the first automobile races took place.

In 1894, a competition was held to determine the dependability of automobiles, and the winner averaged 16.4 kilometers per hour over the roughly 80 kilometers (50 miles) that separated Paris and Rouen, France (10.2 mph).

The first genuine race took place in 1895, and it went all the way from Paris to Bordeaux, France, and back again. The victor traveled an average of 24.15 kilometers per hour.

On Thanksgiving Day, 1895, a group of Americans in Chicago set out to race 87 kilometers to Evanston, Illinois, and back.

This was the first organized vehicle race in the United States. Newspapers used both early races as promotional tools, therefore they supported both.

Up until 1903, when the Paris-to-Madrid race was halted at Bordeaux due to a high number of accidents, town-to-town races in France or from France to other nations were commonplace across Europe.

The Circuit de Périgueux, the world’s first 145-kilometer-long closed-circuit road race, was held for the first time in 1898. With the establishment of the Automobile Club de France in 1895, this type of racing soon became the norm across Europe with the exception of the British Isles.

Over 80.46 kilometers per hour was reached by racecars by 1900. As a result of the dangers posed to spectators, racers, and cattle by taking place on roads that were never intended for automotive traffic, the number of road races gradually dwindled.

The Mille Miglia race, however, continued until 1957.
