A Brief Overview Of The Past
During the 1880s, when the first gasoline (petrol) powered internal combustion engines were developed, the first automobile races took place.
In 1894, a competition was held to determine the dependability of automobiles, and the winner averaged 16.4 kilometers per hour over the roughly 80 kilometers (50 miles) that separated Paris and Rouen, France (10.2 mph).
The first genuine race took place in 1895, and it went all the way from Paris to Bordeaux, France, and back again. The victor traveled an average of 24.15 kilometers per hour.
On Thanksgiving Day, 1895, a group of Americans in Chicago set out to race 87 kilometers to Evanston, Illinois, and back.
