National King Day, History And Fact

The United States observes Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on the third Monday of January to recognise his impact on the world. During the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott, which was led by African Americans, he rose to national prominence as a Baptist minister advocating nonviolent means to end racial segregation.

In 1957, he organised the first March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. During the 1960s, he was the most prominent African American civil rights leader, and his efforts were crucial to the passage of landmark legislation including the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Which banned discrimination in public accommodations, facilities, and employment, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which guaranteed equal access to the ballot box for all citizens. In 1964, King was presented with the Nobel Peace Prize. On April 4, 1968, he was murdered.

There were calls for a national holiday in King’s honour almost immediately after his death. Multiple jurisdictions have observed his January 15th birthday as a holiday since at least 1970.

Legislation proposing a federal holiday was first introduced in Congress in 1968, but it was unable to gain traction due to strong opposition along racial and political lines.

Thanksgiving is a federal holiday observed every year in the United States and Canada to give thanks for the year’s harvest and other bounties. The English colonists (Pilgrims) at Plymouth in 1621 celebrated a successful harvest with the local Wampanoag people. American Thanksgiving is a celebration steeped in myth and symbolism, and its traditional menu includes turkey, bread stuffing, potatoes, cranberries, and pumpkin pie. Because of the annual tradition of getting together with loved ones, this holiday season is typically the busiest for driving.
