History of Kosrae Constitution Day

Humans have lived on the island of Kosrae for at least a millennium, and perhaps much longer. The Europeans wouldn’t see it until September 14, 1529, when the Spanish explorer Alvaro de Saavedra spotted it. The Spanish wouldn’t truly settle there until the final decades of the nineteenth century.

After WWI, the island would be occupied by the Japanese Empire. The islands were fortified by the Japanese during WWII, but the island was never attacked. During the war, the island was a part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, which meant that once it ended, the United States would take over administration.

After the Marshall and Palau Trust Districts rejected the Micronesian constitution, Kosrae, Yap, Chuuk, and Pohnpei formed the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). Each of the states in the FSM began drafting its own constitution shortly after the FSM Constitution was ratified. Kosrae adopted its state constitution on January 11, 1984, and this date is still recognised as Constitution Day.
