Is Walmart 30TB Portable SSD For $39 Scam (It Is, Naturally, a Scam)

If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. When you see a portable 30TB SSD for $39 at Walmart (hat tip to Ars Technica), that’s the first thing that should pop into your head. Even though it isn’t a top-tier solid-state drive, this device should be on everyone’s blacklist.

For kicks, Ray Redacted(opens in new tab) on Twitter bought a 30TB portable SSD from AliExpress. The drive normally retails for $31.40, but Walmart actually sells it for a slight premium.

The “Portable SSD” is essentially an aesthetic ripoff of the ubiquitous Samsung T5. The Chinese imitation is so close to the T5 that it even uses the same text. Despite being marketed as a USB 3.1 drive, Ray found out that it could only operate at USB 2.0 speeds. The portable SSD has two microSD cards adhered to a small green PCB (HUB-TF2) on the inside.

The same con can be found in various forms. One Twitter user (opens in new tab) shared that his portable SSD actually contained a USB flash drive rather than two microSD cards. To put it another way, the portable SSD is nothing more than a USB hub with multiple microSD card slots.

We have seen storage devices with questionable specs before. It is important to exercise caution when shopping for electronic devices because counterfeit USB drives, solid-state drives, and secure digital cards are widely available.

The modified firmware overwrites existing data while retaining the file system structure. It acts normally, but when you try to access your files, you’ll find that they’re missing.

Consumers should exercise caution when shopping for anything online, including computer hardware. Given the proliferation of marketplaces where smaller vendors can list their wares alongside those of larger ones (think Newegg and Walmart), this is more crucial than ever.

Walmart

Based in Bentonville, Arkansas, Walmart Inc. is a multinational retail corporation headquartered in the United States that operates a chain of hypermarkets (also called supercenters), discount department stores, and grocery stores.

Sam Walton started the business in nearby Rogers, Arkansas in 1962, and on October 31, 1969, it was formally incorporated as a Delaware corporation. It also controls the Sam’s Club retail warehouse business.

As of the 31st of July, 2022, Walmart operates 10,585 stores and clubs in 24 countries under 46 different banners. The American and Canadian divisions are known as Walmart, while the Mexican and Central American divisions are known as Walmart de México y Centroamérica, and the Indian division is known as Flipkart Wholesale.

The returns on Walmart’s investments in countries outside the United States have been a mixed bag. Its Canadian, British, Central American, South American, and Chinese operations and subsidiaries are flourishing, but its Japanese, South Korean, and German attempts at expansion were not.

History

Sam Walton, a former employee of J. C. Penney, bought a Ben Franklin franchise from the Butler Brothers in 1945. He portrayed his mission of selling cheap goods to the masses as a crusade on behalf of the buyer.

Walton established the original Wal-Mart Discount City on July 2, 1962, at 719 W. Walnut Street in Rogers, Arkansas. Both Walton and Kmart’s founder, Harry B. Cunningham, found inspiration for the store’s layout at Ann & Hope, which opened in 1961.

In its first five years of business, the firm doubled its revenue to $9 million and grew to 18 locations across the state of Arkansas. It expanded into other states in 1968 when stores debuted in Sikeston, Missouri, and Claremore, Oklahoma.

2005–2010: Initiatives

Environmental Initiatives

In an effort to improve its poor environmental track record, Walmart announced a series of environmental initiatives in November 2005.

Walmart planned to spend $500 million annually to achieve its primary goals, which included reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent in seven years, cutting energy use at stores by 30 percent and reducing solid waste from U.S. stores and Sam’s Clubs by 25 percent in three years.

Texas Retail Energy, Walmart’s in-house electricity provider, was founded with the intention of supplying Walmart stores in the state of Texas with low-cost electricity bought on the wholesale market. The company hoped to save $15 million annually through this new venture while also laying the groundwork and infrastructure to sell electricity to consumers in Texas in the future.
