In the United States, Steven Frederic Seagal (born April 10, 1952) is known as an actor, screenwriter, and martial artist. He spent his early adult years in Japan teaching martial arts, where he earned his 7th dan in aikido, and later took over his father-in-dojo.

On Wednesday, January 11, Steven Seagal’s agents announced that the actor was still alive. That adds him to the long list of renowned people who have been duped by this scheme. Disregard what you’ve seen online, they said; he’s fine and well and living.

Some of the actor’s biggest admirers have spoken out against the fabricated story, calling it thoughtless, upsetting, and harmful to the actor’s loyal fanbase. Others argue that it shows how popular he is among the general public.

Upon his return to the United States, Steven met Kelly LeBrock, an actress, but he soon began dating Adrienne La Russa. A later court ruling deemed Steven and Adrienne’s 1984 marriage to be invalid. In the late 1980s, Seagal began working as a consultant for the Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, police department. Sheriff Harry Lee, a huge Steven Seagal fan, enlisted the action star as a reserve deputy after he spent so much time helping train his department in martial arts and marksmanship.

This side job of Seagal’s was the inspiration for his A&E reality show Steven Seagal: Lawman, which aired in 2009. Jenny McCarthy, a television personality, also spoke up, stating that during an audition for Under Siege 2 Seagal asked that she remove her clothing. Those accusations were refuted by Seagal.

Former “Bond girl” Rachel Grant, who played in the 007 film Die Another Day, went public with her own account in January 2018, telling the BBC that Seagal shoved her into a bed and pulled down his pants during her audition for his 2003 film Out for a Kill.

Seagal once more refuted accusations of malfeasance. Similarly, two women in Los Angeles filed reports with police in January of 2018; one of them, On Deadly Ground extra Regina Simons, described in detail how Seagal raped her when she was 18 years old.

The LAPD declined to comment, citing privacy restrictions, although they did say they were looking into another claim against Seagal.

Seagal went on the offence as it became clear that simply directing a publicist to refute the assault allegations wouldn’t suffice. He made an appearance on right-wing fringe conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ InfoWars network, where he claimed he was the victim of a massive, well-funded plot.

He said that “40 percent” of the sexual assault charges being made as part of the expanding #MeToo movement were false, and pledged retribution against those he believed to be spreading lies.
