The Origins Of South Park, As Told By Its Directors And Writers

On this week’s episode of Basic!, a podcast series that looks back at the glorious days of basic television history, Parker and Stone dropped in with presenters Doug Herzog (formerly network executive for MTV, Cartoon Network, Fox) and Jen Chaney (TV reviewer at New York Magazine/Vulture).

While we would prefer not to give anything away about the episode (it’s a must-listen for those interested in learning about a lot of with behind activities), there were a few standouts that we thought were worth mentioning.

First of all, FOX was interested in the show, but only if it were retooled to centre on a family rather than four kids (presumably in an effort to replicate the success of The Simpsons on South Park).

And at the 21:20 mark, Herzog deserves a tonne of praise for putting his creative integrity on the line by confessing that herzog tried to prevent Parker and or Stone from murdering Kenny every week.

From there, we discussed how Mr. Hankey, The Holiday Poo (S01E09) “mainstreamed” excrement and shared a hilarious incident about a Comedy Central executive who couldn’t handle seeing any more poop in his office.

Around the 28:20 minute, the three of them start talking about the parody of Gladiator and Battlefield: Earth in “The Gauntlet,” a short film made for the 2020 Vma Movie Awards.

The actor Isaac Hayes (Chef) revealed that he was a Scientologist after hearing rumours that the short’s ending had a joke about Cartman and toilet paper that wasn’t very complimentary to L. Rob Hubbard (writer of Battlefield: Earth), Dianetics, and Scientology.

Conclusion

Now we know how The Organization of Scientology was aware of the short’s contents at the exact same time the rest of us were. Here’s your opportunity to watch the complete show for yourselves:
