On the fourth Monday of every January, people show their gratitude to community managers by celebrating Community Manager Appreciation Day. Jeremiah Owyang conceived of it in the year 2010 as a means of acknowledging the work that community managers all over the world put in.

A day in the life of a community manager is filled with nonstop content creation, never-ending monitoring of user activity, and conversation after conversation. It’s been said that community managers should never sleep because social media never stops moving forward.

Because of this, on this day, we celebrate community managers and vendors in the social media marketplace by posting blogs to express our gratitude for the hard work and commitment they have shown.

The Beginnings Of The Holiday Honoring Community Managers

Community managers (CMs) are a relatively new phenomenon that emerged with the advent of the internet. In the 1990s, when MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games) were at the height of their popularity, the need arose for someone to manage the burgeoning online community.ommunities that formed around these games. Although the term, CM, took a bit longer to be used.

Community managers’ responsibilities expanded beyond the realm of video games as the internet expanded and new forms of online interaction emerged.

In addition to handling things like social media, PR, and customer service, online community managers may also be responsible for things like managing online message boards, coming up with new ways for people to work together, and facilitating that all-important two-way dialogue between the product’s creators and their customers.
