Atlanta Rapper Addresses Gun Violence: ‘Every Time I Turn On The TV, It’s Killing And Shootings’

A fresh effort is being made to put an end to the violence that youths engage in. Rap lyrics are being blamed by city leaders in Atlanta for contributing to an increase in gang violence in the city. Now, some rap artists from the surrounding area are speaking out to say “enough is enough.”

Young Dro, an Atlanta rapper, is releasing new music for the first time ever in a public setting, and it deals with issues of youth violence.

“I was crying out to my young guys, tired of seeing your mama weep, tired of watching this blood poured, and tired of hearing these gun fire,” I said. “I am exhausted.”

These are a few of the lines that can be found in Young Dro’s new song titled “Guns Down.” Young Dro remarked, “Every time I turn on the TV, it’s death and shootings and other stuff like that.”

The most recent shooting, according to the Atlanta Police Department, involves three teenagers who were shot on Northside Drive on Monday night. According to the investigators, they suspect the shooting was related to a previous altercation.

Young Dro expressed his concern by saying, “We’re just losing them at an alarming pace.”

Young Dro reveals to Larry Spruill of Channel 2 that he has personal experience with the effects of gun violence.

“Uh, I was 15 years old when I was shot,” he explained.

Now that he was a parent, he felt the need to take action. Because of this, he intends to host a panel discussion on the topic of youth violence and rap music together with other rappers and leaders from the local community.

I thought of the phrase, ‘It Still Takes a Village,’ and it has stuck with me. In his words, “it’s like a panel, but more like a conversation between parents and kids.”

It has been announced by Young Dro that the ‘It Still Takes a Village’ tour will begin on January 26 at the City of South Fulton Arts Center. Since he is aware that young adolescents listen to his music as well as the lyrics of other rappers, he decided to make use of his platform in order to comment on the content of the songs.

“When kids hear that, they misinterpret what we’re genuinely meaning by it,” he added. “When adults hear it, they know exactly what we mean.”

“I believe that conducting a panel or having a dialogue, for the purpose of me to explain to you what kind of content I just put out, after the release of every album, would be the strategy that I would take. (Do you believe that would be successful?) “Yeah, I believe that it will be successful,” Young Dro remarked.

Shoulder Lean, his hit song that features the Atlanta rapper T.I., is largely responsible for his fame.

In the past, he has been given negative feedback regarding his songs; but, he is confident that this time around, his message will be heard and understood.

“I have a lot of faith that this message will get through to the children, and I also have faith that it will get through to the parents. It is never too late to start over. When he was asked, “I think that, if you don’t say nothing now, then when are you going to say something?,” he replied, “when are you going to say something?”

On January 26, 2023, at 7 p.m., the “It Still Takes a Village” Guns Down Initiative 2023 Tour will be held at the City of South Fulton Arts Center, which is located at 915 New Hope Road.
