Why Did Steve Carell Leave The Office? (Fans Of The Office Were Devastated)

The official reason given for Carell’s departure from The Office was that he wanted to spend more time with his family.

Although he didn’t address the issue head-on, he did reveal in an interview with Us Weekly in 2010 that Season 7 would be his last because of contract expiration.  Many assumed he needed to focus on his family and his emerging acting career. “I will miss all my friends,” he told Parade.

Seven or eight years have passed since we first met. The friendships I made on set will be the ones I miss the most, even though it’s been a long time since we shot the pilot.

Steve Carell’s exit from The Office played out beautifully on screen. His final episode, “Goodbye, Michael,” and the episodes leading up to it hit all the right notes. They demonstrated that Michael Scott, the branch manager, not only deserved but also received the affection he had always sought.

Michael had redeemed from his former self as a thin-skinned, approval-hungry man-child, and now he didn’t take himself too seriously and didn’t crave the limelight.

His future with Amy Ryan’s endearingly awkward Holly Flax was determined after a long, hard (that’s what she said) journey. As a mature adult, Michael Scott had outlived his usefulness on the show.

Carell’s farewell excellently played, but it need not have been the end of his run on the show.

Producer Ben Silverman and editor Claire Scanlon revealed that Carell was willing to stay on for more episodes, but the network frustratingly fluffed it. On the podcast “An Oral History of The Office,” hosted by Brian Baumgartner (who played Kevin Malone on the show).

The cast of The Office signed the standard seven-season contract when the show first premiered. (This was by no means a sure thing at first.

The show’s pilot is notorious for being one of the lowest-rated ever tested by NBC; early ratings weren’t great, and Carell wasn’t recognized as a comedy star until the release of 2005’s The 40-Year-Old Virgin. At the end of the 2009–2010 season, with only two years left on their contracts, everyone but Carell renegotiated for an additional year.
