Born on January 17, 1706 (O.S. January 6, 1705)[Note 1] and passing away on April 17, 1790, Benjamin Franklin FRS FRSA FRSE was a prolific American author, scientist, inventor, statesman, diplomat, printer, publisher, and political philosopher.

Franklin was one of the United States’ Founding Fathers, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and the country’s first postmaster general, as well as one of the preeminent thinkers of his era.

His research into electricity and his charting and naming of the current still known as the Gulf Stream made him a prominent figure in the American Enlightenment and the history of physics. His many inventions, such as the lightning rod, bifocals, and the Franklin stove, earned him widespread renown.

Historian Henry Steele Commager once wrote, “In Franklin could be merged the virtues of Puritanism without its defects, the illumination of the Enlightenment without its heat.” In terms of shaping the kind of society America would become, Franklin has been called “the most accomplished American of his age.”
