What Happened To Andrew Luck? The Indianapolis Colts Starting Quarterback Retired After Just Seven Seasons!

Andrew Luck, two and a half years after shocking the football world, casually entered a coffee shop on the north side of Indianapolis and politely asked if we may sit outside. He blamed a cold he caught from his daughter Lucy at school. A cold had given him a scratchy voice and a runny nose.

I told him it was fine, thinking this was a distraction at first until realizing that he actually wanted the table furthest from the entrance. Just so you know where I stand, here it is:

A few people seemed to be paying attention during our hour-and-a-half-long conversation. And last, is that Andrew Luck? No doubt they were curious. Do I see him right?

Indeed, it did. And yes, he still resides in Indianapolis, only a short drive from the Colts’ training facility, where his former team is still trying to get over his abrupt departure as the face of the club. One of the most stunning moves in sports history was made by Luck in August of 2019.

After the news conference the night he announced his retirement from the NFL, my longtime colleague Stephen Holder whispered to me, “That might be the last we ever see of him.”

Two Years Ago Today, Andrew Luck Officially Announced His Retirement

Andrew Luck was a highly regarded NFL prospect straight out of college. The Colts were at a crossroads with Peyton Manning, and it made sense to look past Manning’s weakened neck and into Luck’s future. Manning’s NFL career was on the decline, but Luck was a bright future for the league.

After selecting Luck in the first round of the NFL draught, the Colts released Manning.

Two Years Ago Today, Andrew Luck Officially Announced His Retirement

According to ESPN, Luck became the first player in NFL history to win the most games in his first season after being selected first overall.

They had a winning record of 11-5 but were eliminated in the Wild Card round of the playoffs. In that season, he threw for 23 touchdowns but also 18 picks.

In his second year, Luck led the Colts to an 11-5 record while throwing for 23 touchdowns and 9 picks. Even though they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, the club showed clear signs of improvement.

Even in his third year, he still managed to go 11-5. Luck found a new gear, and the team was just as successful as before. Luck had his best statistical year ever in 2014 when the quarterback threw 40 touchdown passes against only 16 picks. A storm, though, loomed on the horizon.

Unfortunately for Luck, the Indianapolis Colts offensive line was among the worst in the league, leading to a number of serious injuries. In 2015, it finally caught up with him significantly. The shoulder injury limited Luck’s participation that season to just seven games. During that seven-game stretch, the team had a losing record of 2-5.

As A Family Man, Andrew Luck Has No Plans To Return To The NFL

During a January 2021 press conference, Colts owner Jim Irsay confirmed that he had discussed the possibility of Andrew rejoining the NFL. If Andrew opted to come back to the team, the Colts would control his contract. What Irsay Said

I believe he is content since he is a father and is bringing up a beautiful daughter. We don’t want to be obnoxious by continuously repeating, “There is no sense to it,” but he is a great Colt and can return whenever he likes.

As a family man, Andrew Luck has no plans to return to the NFL

Irsay has said that the Colts’ family would welcome Andrew back with open arms, but he has consistently played down the likelihood of Andrew playing again. I think it kind of stands where it stands,” he remarked. According to Irsay, it’s unlikely that they’ll receive a “fax” from Andrew announcing his return.

Jim’s statement emphasized the importance of Andrew making a sincere decision to recommit to the game before he could return to the field. “Jim said:

We’ve made it clear to him how much we want him to be our starting quarterback. There’s no doubt about it, but we also know that he has to be the one to say, “I’m ready” for it to succeed. In some ways, I want to make history that has never been made before.

Andrew’s passion for the sport remains strong. During his recent ski trip to Summit County, Colorado, Luck stopped by a football practice at Summit High School. A Colorado skier, Luck surprised the coaches and players with his presence to talk football. Head football coach James Wagner shared Andrew’s enthusiasm from the session:

“I can’t seem to get over this stage. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to pursue my dreams. The fun has been taken out of the game, and now my only option is to quit football altogether “Then Andrew made further comment.

Maybe the ex-athlete is now focusing on their studies. In March of 2018, he was asked what he planned to do after his football career, and he told a reporter from the Washington Post, “Honestly, I think I could be quite happy teaching high school history.”

It’s hardly surprising, as he’s still enthusiastic about the book club he founded three years ago, named after Andrew Luck. To quote the initiative’s Instagram bio: “The objective of the Andrew Luck Book Club is to share my pleasure of reading and to establish a team of readers by participating through social media.”
