USA Basketball announces August 2022 World Cup Qualifying Team (UPDATED 2022)

International basketball competition contested by senior men’s national teams of members. The International Basketball Federation (FIBA), is the sport’s global governing body. Between 1950 and 2010, the competition was known as the FIBA World Championship. This tournament is FIBA’s most prestigious annual competition.

FIBA

The tournament is organized similarly to the FIFA World Cup, but not exactly. From 1970 to 2014, both tournaments were held annually. Similarly, the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup is held every four years for female teams. Starting in 1986 and continuing through 2014. Both the men’s and women’s championships took place in the same year but in different countries.

The first FIBA World Cup tournament to allow active NBA players from the United States who had also played in an official NBA regular season game was the 1994 tournament, which was held in Canada. Since that time, the FIBA World Championship/World Cup has always been played at a professional level.

Qualification

Five of the World Cup’s previous tournaments, all of which were won by teams from the Americas, were played in South America. The three Olympic champions, the host nation of Argentina, and two teams from Europe, and Asia. And South America was all scheduled to compete in the inaugural FIBA World Cup.

Six of the ten teams were from the Americas (all three Olympic medalists were from the Americas, plus the zone received two continental berths and Asia’s berth), but no Asian team was willing to travel to participate. After missing the first two tournaments, the former European powerhouse Soviet Union finally made its debut in 1959.

It was initially invitation-only due to the lack of established continental tournaments outside of Europe and South America. Subsequently, in 1960, Asia got its own continental championship, and then in 1962, Africa, 1965, and Oceania the following decade. As a result of these alterations, the qualifying process for the 1967 tournament became more structured.

The only significant change occurred in 1990 when the FIBA World Championship began accepting qualifiers from the reorganized FIBA Americas Championship rather than from North America, Central America, and South America separately. In 2006, when the field expanded to 24 teams, qualification was distributed as follows:

The five continental championships were held every two years, and each one served as a qualifier for the Olympics. The qualifying year was the one that immediately preceded the World Championship. For the 2010 FIBA World Cup, for instance, all of the qualifying spots were decided at continental tournaments held in 2009.

After the first 20 teams qualified, FIBA chose four additional teams as “wild cards” based on sportsmanship, economy, and governance standards, as well as a registration fee paid by each team. Only three of the four scufflers could originate from the same continent. Two tournaments were held with a wild card system, and in each of those competitions, FIBA invited a maximum of three European teams.

Tournament format

From ten to twenty-four teams have competed in the Basketball World Cup over the years. In 1950, ten teams competed in a double-elimination bracket before six teams played a round robin to determine the winner. There was always a preliminary round played in groups between 1954 and 1974, with the winners of those groups advancing to a final round robin to determine the tournament champion.

Each of the three tournaments held between 1990 and 1998 featured two groups of four teams, with the winners advancing to a knockout round. When the number of teams in the elimination round increased to eight in 2002 . The tournament was a huge success.

The current format, in place since 2006, was implemented by FIBA, and the number of teams was increased to 24. That setup had the teams split into four groups of six for the first round.

The next stages are the semifinals, the final, and finally the quarterfinals. Losers from the semi-finals play for bronze, and those from the quarter-finals compete. In a consolation bracket to determine fifth through eighth places.

Naismith Trophy

The Naismith Trophy, named after basketball’s namesake James Naismith, has been presented annually to the tournament’s victor since 1967. Although the idea of a trophy had been discussed since the first World Championship in 1950, it wasn’t until 1965, when FIBA received a donation of $1,000, that the idea was put into action. From 1967 until 1994, the original trophy was awarded annually.

For the 1998 FIBA World Championship, a new trophy was introduced, and the old one is now on display. At the Pedro Ferrándiz Foundation in Spain. The second trophy is shaped like a lotus flower. In the style of ancient Egypt and is adorned with a globe. Five continent maps, and precious stones (FIBA Americas represents both North America and South America).

In addition to the Latin, Arabic, Chinese, and Egyptian hieroglyphs, Dr. Naismith’s name is engraved on all four sides. The trophy has a height of 47 centimeters (18.5 inches) and a mass of 9 kilograms (twenty pounds).

At the 7 May 2017 Draw Ceremonies for the 2019 FIBA World Cup Qualifications, the most recent design for the Naismith Trophy was unveiled. There are inscriptions of the names of past World Cup winners at the trophy’s base, and it stands at about 60 centimeters (13 cm taller than the version used in 1998).
