Who is Johnny Mathis?

John Royce Mathis, better known as Johnny Mathis, was an American pop singer who became famous for his angelic voice and love ballads. He was born on September 30, 1935, in Gilmer, Texas. Perhaps his most famous performance was of “Misty,” a song written by Erroll Garner (1959).

Originally from San Francisco, Mathis was raised by a large, close-knit family of working-class origin. Because his father was a vaudeville performer, he grew up appreciating and enjoying music. This led him to often perform in church and school choirs. In addition, he began taking vocal lessons at the age of 13 that laid a solid classical groundwork for his developing skill. Mathis, on the other hand, was an outstanding athlete who was able to secure a full athletic scholarship to San Francisco State University because of his achievements in high school (now San Francisco State University). He was singing in college jazz clubs when he was discovered by a representative from Columbia Records. Mathis was invited to Olympic tryouts for the high jump in 1956, but instead of attending, he dropped out of school to pursue a career in music with Columbia.

Mathis, in a phone conversation, said, “My passion has never wavered.” However, I believe that a number of factors that fell into place contributed to the length of time it took to resolve. As a child, I participated in sports, so I’ve made it a point to keep my body in shape, knowing that it will benefit my singing career. I still see my trainer five times a week. When I was younger, I began my musical training with an opera singer, so I’ve always had an inquisitive mind and a wide range of interests to keep me focused.
