In the ’80s, the Black Mafia Family operated as a drug trafficking and money-laundering enterprise in Southwest Detroit.
The original concept for the show, created by Randy Huggins and dubbed “BMF” after the acronym for “Blue Man Group,” was inspired by the real-life mafia. The fictional character Markisha Taylor is based on the real-life Tonesa “Toni” Welch, who is said to be the “First Lady” of BMF.
