The American fantasy comedy film Groundhog Day was directed by Harold Ramis and written by Ramis and Danny Rubin and released in 1993.
Chris Elliott, Andie MacDowell, and Bill Murray star. Murray plays Phil Connors, a jaded TV weatherman who gets stuck in a time loop after covering the annual Groundhog Day celebration in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.
Aside from the aforementioned, the film also features the likes of Stephen Tobolowsky, Brian Doyle-Murray, Marita Geraghty, Angela Paton, Rick Ducommun, Rick Overton, and Robin Duke.
In the early 1990s, Rubin conceived of Groundhog Day’s basic structure. He wrote it as a sample script to impress potential clients and land meetings with producers.
After it caught Ramis’s attention, he collaborated with Rubin to lighten the overall tone and increase the comedy in order to make the project more accessible to a wide range of viewers.
After Being Cast,
Murray and Ramis had a disagreement about the script, with Murray wanting to highlight the philosophical elements and Ramis emphasising the comedic ones.
Most of the filming took place in Woodstock, Illinois, between March 1992 and June 1992. The bitter cold made filming difficult, but Ramis and Murray’s feud made things even more challenging.
The 1993 film Groundhog Day was a financial success, grossing over $105 million upon its release and becoming one of the year’s highest-earning movies.
It was also well received by critics. Critics were unanimous in their praise of the film’s philosophical message, which lay beneath the comedy, and the seamless integration of heartfelt and cynical moments.
It was nominated for several awards and ended up taking home a BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay.
Despite the film’s success, it marked the end of Ramis and Murray’s long working relationship, which included such films as Caddyshack (1980) and Ghostbusters (1984). After filming wrapped, the actors remained silent until Ramis’s death in 2014.
The film was a breakthrough for Murray, who had previously been typecast as a comedic actor but whose performance here opened the door to leading roles in critically lauded dramas.

There has been a staged appearance of an animal on February 2nd in Punxsutawney, in the state’s west central region, since 1887.
Punxsutawney Phil, a groundhog, has become the focus of TV weathercasters and newspaper photographers as part of a media event.

Development

Richard Lovett, from the Creative Arts Agency, noticed it. Lovett explained that he was unable to take on Rubin’s case and gave the script to another client of his, comedian Harold Ramis.

Characterised by anti-establishment and anti-institutional comedies like Caddyshack (1980) and National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983), but by the early 1990s, he had begun to distance himself from these types of projects.
Ramis had previous success both in front of and behind the camera, as well as in other creative capacities like writing, but his last directorial effort, Club Paradise (1986), bombed at the box office.
He was keen on helming a one-of-a-kind production, and he was especially drawn to comedies with themes of second chances and finding one’s true calling. Having seen Ramis in movies and on TV, Rubin was familiar with his previous work.
In reading Rubin’s script, Ramis said he didn’t find any humour. He was drawn in by the story’s spirituality and romance, but felt it lacked the necessary levity.
The two talked about the script’s central themes, drawing connections to Buddhist and reincarnation ideas.
They debated whether it was morally acceptable for Superman, who can save countless lives and prevent disasters, to waste time on adventures with his girlfriend Lois Lane.
