We last left the adolescents of Showtime’s unexpected smash Yellowjackets abandoned in the Canadian wilderness over a year ago.
In case you forgot, the show followed a high school girls’ soccer team called the Yellowjackets as they learned to rely on their natural instincts when their plane crashed in the woods and they were forced to learn to forage, hunt, and possibly even eat each other to stay alive.
The series jumps back and forth in time between the girls’ lives before the crash, when high school hierarchies were the norm, the immediate aftermath of the crash, when unlikely heroes rose to the top of the makeshift society, and the future, when the survivors of the crash are extorted for the truth about what happened in the forest 25 years earlier.
A humongous buzz! Yes, that buzzing in your ear is the return of everyone’s favourite programme about a made-up New Jersey suburban soccer team that gets stranded in the Canadian wilderness when their plane crashes on the way to a tournament and is forced to eat each other to survive.
Then here came all these other stories using metaphors about a girl’s adolescence being a wild, unyielding torment. I kid, I kid! Even though it’s going into its second season, Yellowjackets is still one of the most creative shows on television.
That’s a good thing to remember as we try to get over the somewhat low expectations set by the pilot’s relative lack of excitement.

Yellowjackets Season 2 Episode 1 Review
Yellowjackets is returning for a second season, and it doesn’t come back with a bang or a whisper, but with something much more frightening.
The first season of the Showtime series plummeted onto our screens in late 2021, and it followed a high school soccer team from New Jersey as they travelled to a national tournament on the west coast. The plane they were travelling in crashed in the Canadian wilderness, and the series alternated between two timelines to show the team’s reactions to the tragedy 25 years later.
It’s like we never left in the second season debut, which throws us right back into the action. Even though there are several plots and timeframes to keep track of and many questions left unanswered from the end of Season 1, this episode never feels cluttered or confusing.
Forget about Shauna’s serial killer tendencies for a second; Yellowjackets may have just given us our first important hint as to the origins of the team’s cannibalism. It’s true that the crew has nowhere else to bury Jackie. Everyone is doing their best to respect Shauna’s need for privacy as she deals with her loss. Whether or not they realise it, this choice is also helping to preserve their one and only source of meat.
Shauna’s fatal taste of flesh at the end of the pilot episode adds to the atmosphere of foreboding. When does she use it, and how?
She carries it around in her pocket the whole episode, where it collects lint and serves as a constant temptation, until she ultimately gives in and eats it raw and uncooked, chewy cartilage and all. It’s hard to imagine a more ominous indicator that the Yellowjackets, or at least Shauna, are planning to feast on Jackie’s corpse.

Conclusion
It is likely that Melanie Lynskey, Christina Ricci, and Tawny Cypress will all return for Yellowjackets Season 2 Episode 1. It’s possible that the story’s cast will expand with the introduction of new characters.
Guilt is a constant theme in Shauna’s episodes, both in the present and in the past, when she blames herself for the death of her closest friend Jackie (Ella Purnell), who died of hypothermia after an argument at the conclusion of season 1.
Young Shauna (Sophie Nélisse) props up Jackie’s lifeless body and tells her everything she wished she’d spoken to her while she was still alive. This includes the story of how Shauna met her future husband, Jeff, who was previously involved with Jackie.
Then, distressing Shauna, Jackie’s ear falls off as her body slides off the wall due to rigour mortis. She keeps her best friend’s severed ear in her pocket for the duration of the episode because she has no idea what to do with it. Shauna finally proves the Yellowjackets’ theory by devouring Jackie’s ear at the end of the episode. We’ve returned!
