Cause Of Death

A preliminary autopsy report released on December 27 speculated that NFL legend Reggie White died from respiratory disease in addition to other health problems.

Mecklenburg County’s medical examiner, Dr. Mike Sullivan, speculated that White died of “fatal cardiac arrhythmia,” a condition caused by a lack of oxygen in the blood. Sullivan’s report also suggested sleep apnea played a role.

This is a preliminary report, and Sullivan’s office stated it might take up to three months to determine the official cause of death. White passed away on the 26th of December at Presbyterian Hospital in Huntersville. He had been transported there from Cornelius. Sara, his wife, dialled 911 for help.

White’s family representative Keith Johnson noted that White had sarcoidosis for many years. He had some sort of breathing problem that was keeping him up at night, he said.

Sarcoidosis is described as a condition defined by the presence of tiny regions of inflammatory cells, which can target any organ of the body but most commonly affects the lungs, according to the American Lung Association’s website.

The disease disproportionately affects blacks and whites from northern Europe, although its origin is unknown. People with sleep apnea experience pauses in breathing that can last several seconds and occur hundreds of times every night.

This sickness took the life of a man who was well-liked by his fellow NFL players for his skills on and off the field.

The Minister, Or Reggie White

Reggie White, among the most outstanding defensive players in American footballing history, is affectionately known as the “Minister of Defense” by fans.

From the The University of Tennessee, he was drafted first overall into the National Football League, where he spent 15 years playing for Philadelphia Eagles, Green Bay Packers, and Carolina Panthers. During that time, he was named to 13 Pro Bowls, helped the Packers win Super Bowl XXXI in 1997, and was eventually inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2006.

White became a minister in the Baptist church and gained the nickname “Baptist preacher” while attending the University of Tennessee. In his final years, he continued to speak publicly about his faith, giving interviews and even participating in the fictional Christian film Reggie Knox (1996, starring Tim Allen).
