Fatshark, the Vermintide dev behind Vermintide, has taken the Left 4 Dead formula into the future with Warhammer 40,000: Darktide.
Vermintide 2 is one of our favorite co-op games, so we have a lot of faith in the developers, Fatshark. Warhammer 40,000: Darktide marks a shift for the Swedish studio from fantasy to the sci-fi setting of Games Workshop.
In the 41st millennium, it is time to pick up a chainsword and engage in combat. A best-selling 40K author, Dan Abnett, has co-written a story for the game, so expect to fight hordes of enemies in the cramped hive city with your friends.
We’ve had a chance to play Darktide, and it’s an excellent game. Here’s a long gameplay video and my initial thoughts on the game.
Warhammer 40K Darktide Release Date
Until FatShark announced a delay to the game in July 2021, the Spring 2022 release date for Warhammer 40K: Darktide was expected. However, on March 31st, 2022, the release date was pushed back to September 13th, 2022.

Warhammer 40K Darktide Platforms
Warhammer 40,000: Darktide has been confirmed to be released on PC via Steam and Xbox Series X|S. The PlayStation 5 version hasn’t been announced, but it’s possible that the game will arrive on Sony’s platform after a few months of exclusivity for Xbox.

Darktide is a first-person action game with a cooperative focus like the Vermintide series of games.
Atoma Prime’s world is referred to as “Tertium,” and it is located in a hive city. There are several Imperial worlds located in the Moebian Domain, which is a vital fiefdom for the Imperium of Man, and Atoma Prime sits at its center. Both hostile alien races and forces of Chaos, colloquially known as the Darktide, pose a threat to the borders of the Moebian Domain. As a result, many Astra Militarum regiments were raised on Atoma Prime to protect against these threats.
As a result of the Admonition cult’s influence, Chaos forces sent by Nurgle, Lord of Decay, infiltrated the city of Tertium. As previously mentioned, the Moebian Sixth, one of the aforementioned regiments, joined Chaos. It is then that a Lord Inquisitor is sent to Tertium, where he instructs a group of convicts—the player characters—to serve as Inquisitors.

Over 75K voiced lines are included in Darktide to keep the party banter fresh depending on the situation, the composition of the party, and the rank of the player character within the Inquisition.

After watching the “writer reveal” trailer, we’ve learned from it that the player begins the game as a prisoner (are we, Fatshark?). then recruited by an extremely powerful faction of the Imperium known as the Inquisition – a secretive and powerful faction.
- The Zealot – An inquisitorial acolyte type with a bowl cut, a power hammer, and a scroll down their front
- The Veteran – An Imperial Guard stormtrooper with a gas mask and lasgun
- The Ogryn – toting a massive slug gun and a cutlass
- The Psyker – A hooded, warp-powered psyker, who needs no equipment – their mind is a weapon.
