Einar’s shouts as he pulls up a tree stump startle a snake away from a helpless bird in the opening scene of episode 6 of Season 2 of the Viking saga. As Thorfinn tries to dig the stump out of the earth from behind, Einar is seen tugging on it from the front.
Thorfinn suddenly stops him, instructing him to pause so that they may dig the tree out deeper and cut its roots. Still, the stump refuses to budge, so they dig around it and trim its roots in a brief sequence of fruitless effort.
An weary Einar remarks that they need a horses for this labour, and they are finally successful in pulling it out of the earth. He wants to know why they are given an horse to haul the logs but not a horse to till the soil.
In episode 6 of Vinland Saga season 2, Thorfinn reminds Einar that they weren’t lent the horse, but rather forced to do the retainers’ work for them.
After that, Thorfinn asks Einar if he’d rather clear more trees or get started on preparing the fields. But Einar says he’ll talk to “them” again, even though it may be fruitless.

To Einar’s dismay, he is informed that they should possess a horse, even with Pater’s blessing. The retainer adds that there are no more horses available because they are all being employed for other tasks. Having been warned to stop slacking off and return to the woods, Thorfinn says “hi” to a newly arrived retainer.
When Einar remains silent, the retainer walks up to him and labels him as impolite as ever. The second retainer comments that the slaves are no better than cattle after others arrive to claims and take a horse.
He considers it impudent for the two to manage a farm on borrowed land and instructs them to rely on their own limbs to accomplish the labour. The next scene in Vinland Saga season 2 episode 6 features Thorfinn and Einar leaving, with Einar mentioning that he needs to borrow a horse from Ketil.
Thorfinn responds that the retainers will be much more irritated if they employ a horse, even if Ketil allows it. Because there is so much land to clear, Einar points out, it could be decades before they begin farming, but Thorfinn doesn’t seem worried.

An Excellent Exchange Is Made In Episode 6 Of Season 2 Of The Vinland Saga
Eventually, Einar and Thorfinn finish clearing the local environment they are working in of stumps, and they look back on their progress with satisfaction.
As they ride the horse back to Sverkel’s, Einar merrily remarks that at their present rate, they may be ready for just a sowing season by fall. He daydreams about which plough he and Sverkel could use and wondering if Sverkel would lend them one.
While everything is going on, Thorfinn tells Einar what they plan to plant this fall, and Einar mumbles something about “wheat, certainly.” Seeing Thorfinn’s reaction, Einar concludes that Thorfinn never has farmed before, which comes as a shock to Thorfinn.

Thorfinn continues by saying that he never learned how to farm because nobody in his birthplace did it and he was raised in the military.
In episode 6 of Vinland Saga season 2, Einar gushes about how amazing it is that the country has no farms, and he says that his mother and sister wouldn’t be surprised to learn such a thing. After the retainers suddenly called out to them, asking where they acquired the horse, Einar cheerfully exclaimed that Thorfinn may leave the farming chores to him, a specialist.
Despite Einar’s best efforts to introduce Sverkel to the retainers, they show no signs of recognising him when he explains that he granted permission to use the artwork.
They accuse Einar of lying, claiming that no one in the area has the surname Sverkel. In response to a comment about how they don’t have a horse such as this on their farm, Einar again claims that they borrowed the animal from a dude called Sverkel.

Conclusion
The arrival of Sverkel is intriguing, as is the contrast between his connection with Snake and that of his biological son, Ketil. Speculatively, this could be setting up a situation where Sverkel, Ketil, & Snake will be pitted against Ketil, his son Olmar, as well as a third person, most likely Thorfinn or Einar.
