Story Behind The Vasant Panchami, Updated 2023

The Hindu celebration of Basant Panchami takes place in the early spring, around the month of February. On this happy occasion, worshippers honor Sarasvati, the Hindu goddess of wisdom and the arts.

All over India, students, teachers, and administrators enjoy a day of festivities honoring their educational institutions. Academic, creative, and musical success are all ascribed to the Goddess, to whom students pray.

Some aspects of the festival’s celebration are consistent across the many different Indian states. Since the Goddess is often depicted in yellow, it is common for women to don yellow saris.

As a result of the widespread harvesting of mustard during the festival, the color yellow takes on special significance. In addition, a wide variety of Karnataka sweets are prepared as an offering to Maa Sarasvati, and the resulting “prasad” is given out to the attendees.

A Common Question: What Do Individuals Typically Do?

Vasant Panchami is a well-known celebration that ushers in the arrival of spring. Hindus celebrate the beginning of spring with a festival honouring Sarasvati, the goddess of fertility. Young girls take part in the celebrations while dressed in bright yellow dresses.

Because of its association with sunshine and vitality, yellow has taken on special significance for this event. During the festival, the area is awash in a vibrant yellow.

Yellow is a popular color, so many worshippers wear yellow clothes and give yellow flowers to one another and to the gods and goddesses. A unique pastry called kesar halwa (or kesar halva), made with flour, sugar, nuts, and cardamom powder, is also a staple of their cuisine.

The strands of saffron that are incorporated into this dish give it a bright yellow color and a subtle aroma. When the yellow mustard flowers bloom in India in time for the Vasant Panchami festival, the country’s fields become a sea of sunshine. Before students use them, pens, notebooks, and pencils are blessed by placing them near the feet of the goddess Devi.

Meaning Of Vasant Panchami

Hindus celebrate Vasant Panchami because they consider it Goddess Saraswati’s birthday. Saraswati Jayanti is another name for Vasant Panchami because of this.

The worship of Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge and wisdom, is as central to Vasant Panchami as it is to the worship of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, or of Durga, the goddess of power and valour.

Purvahna, the time before noon according to the Hindu calendar, is dedicated to worshipping the Goddess Saraswati on this day. Since white is thought to be Goddess Saraswati’s favourite colour, devotees often dress the deity in white garments and present her with white flowers.

Traditionally, milk and white sesame sweets are offered to the Goddess Saraswati and then shared as Prasad with loved ones. Because of the season’s abundance of bloomed mustard flowers and marigold (Genda Phool), north Indians traditionally honour the goddess Saraswati on the happy occasion of Vasant Panchami by presenting her with bouquets of yellow flowers.

Vasant Panchami is significant as it marks the beginning of the ritual of Vidhya Arambha, which introduces young children to the world of education and formal learning. On the morning of Vasant Panchami, Saraswati Puja is held in most academic institutions.
According to the Hindu calendar, the season of Vasant, which roughly translates to “spring,” is one of six distinct times of year in India. Since the celebration has nothing to do with the Indian springtime of Vasant, the name “Vasant Panchami” is misleading.
