Tragic Crown Heights Fire Claims Life Of Former NYPD Officer

On the evening of February 28, 2023, a devastating fire broke out in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. As a result of the incident, a former officer with the New York Police Department (NYPD) was tragically killed.

At about 8:30 in the evening, a fire broke out in a three-story brick structure that was situated on Buffalo Avenue close to Eastern Parkway.

Officials from the fire department have stated that the blaze swiftly spread throughout the structure, which resulted in occupants being trapped inside.

It has not yet been determined what caused the fire, however preliminary indications indicate that it may have begun in the building’s basement.

The source of the incident is currently being investigated. Over 20 individuals called the building their home at one point, including several families with young children.

As a result of the fire’s rapid spread to higher stories, the residents were panicked and attempted to flee the building.

At just after 4 o’clock in the afternoon, a fire broke out in a six-story building on Union Street that was home to scores of people. The blaze began in the interior of apartment 6B. At the site, Newkirk’s death was confirmed by medical personnel.

A number of Newkirk’s Neighbours expressed their astonishment to News 12 after learning of his passing. They went on to say that they knew him personally and that he was a kind and caring individual.

Across the corner from where the fire broke out, the Fire Safety Education Section of the New York City Fire Department hosted an information session in order to raise community awareness about the importance of fire safety.

Donations of clothing, food, and other supplies are being welcomed at a shelter that the Red Cross has established for locals who have been displaced from their homes.
