The White House: The Definitive Tour Guide Is A Must-Read For Anybody Planning A Trip To Washington, D.C.

This same White House is regarded as one of world’s most famous landmarks since it is where the U.s. president lives and works. Since Adams in 1800, every president of the United States has lived in the White House, making it a cultural and historical landmark that draws millions of tourists every year.

The current iteration of the White House is one of the best-maintained and most beloved structures in the United States. It features 6 floors of living space, 412 doors, 147 skylights, 28 fireplaces, 8 flights of stairs, and 3 lifts. Washington, DC is a must-see for anybody travelling to the nation’s capital.

Timeline Of The Executive Mansion

George Washington chose the location for both the White House in 1791, and an architect of Irish descent, James Hoban, lay the cornerstone the following year. Washington commissioned the massive and ambitious construction project, but he passed away before it was finished.

They were the 2nd President of united States, John Adams, with his wife who were the first individuals to live in what was then called the President’s House.

However, in 1814, a fire started by marauding British soldiers destroyed much of the initial shape. After its construction was finally finished four years later, the residence quickly became the preferred residence of successive American presidents and their families.

Many of the building’s most recognisable features, such as the West Wing, which contains the Oval Office, Cabinet Room, Situation Room, and Roosevelt Room, were added in the early 20th century. Since the White House had been neglected due to lack of funds as during Great Depression, repairs were desperately needed by the 1940s.

One of the world’s most visited tourist destinations is the White House. Tours of the society White House are in high demand, but there are only so many spots available each year. Before you go, familiarise yourself with the best strategies for increasing your odds of securing a tour.

Making Travel Arrangements

Visitors must schedule a visit in advance if they want to see the public areas of the White House.

Even though the tours are free and self-guided, the U.S. National Security agency requires advance notice of at least three weeks before your visit in order to clear you for entry.

Your congressperson can take tour requests up to three months in advance, but they are not required to grant anyone’s wish.

Tuesday through Thursday mornings (7:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.) and Friday mornings (7:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.) are self-guided tour times. The White House typically holds press briefings on Fridays and Saturdays but these days and times are subject to change. You should also be ready for a last-minute tour cancellation.

If your group size is less than 10, you may be combined with another group before you ever arrive. Include the names, addresses, phone numbers, birthdates, Social Security numbers, and countries of birth for everyone in your group.

You’ll need to bring photo identification with you to the interview, and that ID must have precisely the same information that you did on your application. U.S. citizens can provide a valid passport or a government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s licence or military ID.
