Your Entire Professional Life

Phish, the most influential jam band of a ’90s and ’00s, have created not just an expansive and original collection of work, in addition to a distinct and committed fan culture that is reminiscent of the Grateful Dead’s.

Phish, a jam band formed in Vermont in the mid-1980s, has amassed a devoted fan base thanks to its stellar musicianship, eccentric stage presence, and free-form improvisations that incorporate styles as diverse as psychedelic rock, jazz hybrid, funky, rock music, folk, bluegrass, and blues.

Modeled after the Dead, the band put more emphasis on live concert than production work and actively encouraged fans to record and swap recordings of their shows. Despite their propensity for performing on stage, Phish had released a number of excellent studio albums by the beginning of the century, including Billy Breathes (1996) and Farmhouse (2000).

Inside the years that followed, the band encountered its first significant difficulties, but they were able to overcome them, coming back together after a separation of five years and a hiatus of two years.

Onstage, Phish never stopped pushing boundaries throughout the 2010s, and their album of the decade, 2014’s Fuego, debuted in the Top Ten. They’ve started a bunch of festivals, managed their own record company, and influenced a whole bunch of new bands along the way.

Back in 1983, Trey Anastasio (guitar/vocals), Jon Fishman (drums), and Jeff Holdsworth (guitar) met at the Vermont College of Music and formed a band. Eventually, after posting a want ad around school, bassist Mike Gordon joined and the original lineup was complete.

Having settled on the name Phish by early 1984, the band had already begun playing shows away from their alma mater. The band was reinforced at the time by percussionist Marc Daubert, but left around at the time keyboardist Page McConnell arrived. At that point in 1985, with Holdsworth out of the band, Phish had settled on its core lineup.

Phish’s “The Baker’s Dozen” residency at Madison Square Gardens last summer lasted for 13 nights. The band played completely new sets for each show.

After a summer of touring in 2018, Phish focused on their annual Halloween show, where they “covered” the entire album by the made-up ’80s prog metal band Kasvot Vaxt. They continued touring throughout 2019 and released their 15th studio album, Sigma Oasis, in April of 2020.
