Dwynwen, one of King Bryana Brycheiniog’s twenty-four daughters, was the most beautiful. King Bryana had already planned for her to marry another prince when she fell in love with a local lad named Maelon Daffodil.
Melon was devastated by the news, and Dwynwen ran away to the woods to cry and beg God for help. An angel came to her and gave her a sweet potion to help her forget Melon, but in the process, it turned him into a block of ice.
Then, after praying, Dwynwen received three wishes from God. The thawing of Melon was her number one wish, followed by the protection of all true lovers from harm and the promise of never getting married.
Dwynwen, in turn, became a nun and founded a convent on the picturesque Landyn Island off the coast of Anglesey as a token of her appreciation. Because of this, people often refer to her as “she who lives a blessed life.”
She is the patron saint of sick animals in Wales as well as lovers in that country. We can’t guarantee that praying to St. Dwynwen will cure your sick budgie, but it can’t hurt.

She spent so much time in prayer for the benefit of other couples that she was canonised as the patron saint of Wales’ romantics. Most of Wales (though by no means all) celebrates St. Dwynwen’s feast day (January 25) by granting her prayers and devoting the day to their significant others.
Others brave the chill and visit the island of Landyn, where St. Dwayne established a convent, and visit the local carving shop to make a love spoon.For the most part, today is a day to give in to those warm, fuzzy feelings and enthusiastically share them with others.
