Season 10 episode 14 of Chicago P.D. A superb television episode, “Trapped” eventually reveals what took place to the individual who almost killed Kim Burgess.
Whose trauma the show had used as a plot device again for past half of the season while other characters dealt with their own along with the core of Kim’s recent problems.
Part of me hoped that this episode would be a celebration of the team, something the show hasn’t really been in a long time. (and something for which I may be nostalgic)
But the hour does a great job of honouring the types of stories at which the show has also always excelled and the personality work that has carried it to season 10. The spotlight has never been on Voight.
I Refuse To Be Held Hostage In Any Way
The worst aspect about the show’s treatment of Kim’s trauma, especially in the recent past but also in the past, is that her trauma is rarely about her. Her tragedy, however, has been utilised to establish plots involving other characters and has been shunted to the sidelines.
Only to be brought up during Kim episodes and only when it’s “convenient.” Even though there isn’t a set timetable for how trauma manifests, the way this narrative has been portrayed feels unreal.
At least up until now, as “Trapped,” episode 1014 of Chicago P.D., puts the spotlight squarely on Kim and her experiences, reactions, and coping mechanisms, refusing to let anything, not even her friendship with Adam, steal the show.
Though not a Burzek episode, there is no way to write an episode on Kim without Adam playing a significant role because Adams and Kim are now a single person or thing.

This is not a solution-oriented episode; rather, it’s an episode about Kim. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is not something that can be turned off.
In this episode, Kim is shown to instead fight, get up, try, beg for help, fall down, and then get back up again. This isn’t because she’s suddenly feeling better; she definitely isn’t. Yet, she is able to access reserves of strength other people cannot access since she is a skilled expert.
And even while it’s a wrong view to assume that trauma is something one can simply overcome by making the effort to do so, that’s not what’s happening here. It’s been an hour, and Kim is still not better.
There is no redeeming quality about her. But, he has grown stronger for having experienced what she is going through. And with this step out of the way, her recovery can begin.

Warning: This Is Not For Adam
P.D. of Chicago, 10-14 When it comes to Kim’s difficulties in forming close relationships as a result of her trauma, “Trapped” does a fantastic job of conceptualising what has always been clear but required more than simple leaps of reasoning.
The episode would do something even better, though, and that’s establish that Kim wants what Adam wants and what the audience wants. She hasn’t figured out what to do there yet. She has no idea how to take charge and make things happen.
It has seemed for a while that Adam can do nothing more to convince Kim, and so this episode strongly shows that what follows next in the road towards these people getting back together is…healing, on Kim’s part.

This work must be done in psychotherapy, but it must also include the truth that Kim has already been owed for some time but which Voight has already been holding captive.
With the knowledge that Roy is no longer alive, how much further along the road to recovery could she be? Unfortunately, there’s no way to find out, and it’s pointless for us to keep wondering.
When it came to Burzek, though, nothing can compare to the sight of Adam’s forehead against Kim’s as they rode the subway, their faces touching.
Loving isn’t about making each other better, but it might mean being there to help someone else stay afloat while they figure out how to sail. Adam is Kim’s equivalent of this. An anchor in a time of trouble.
The moment she reaches the opposite side is when we get paid off. At least now that it feels like an actual trip rather than just a wishful future.

Conclusion
Kim, that was repeatedly beaten down without ever receiving the full narrative treatment she need, can now begin to recover. Kim, who is considerably better than the script gives her credit for.
