New York Man Faces Sentencing After Illegally Possessing Firearm In Maine

A New York man pleaded guilty Thursday in a Bangor court to illegal handgun possession during an Augusta traffic stop. He faces up to 10 years in prison.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maine, 22-year-old Camby Wilson “knowingly had a handgun during a March 2022 traffic stop in Augusta,” as stated in a press release.

The release claims the gun had four bullets in it and states that Wilson is not allowed to have any firearms due to a 2019 conviction in New York.

The release adds that he could receive a maximum of 10 years in jail, a $250,000 fine, and 3 years of supervised release. When the presentence investigation report for Wilson is finished by the United States Probation Office, he will be sentenced.

Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Augusta Police Department conducted the investigation.

A man from Maine was arrested for holding a gun despite being barred from doing so due to a previous conviction for domestic violence. At his subsequent arraignment, the judge again denied bail.

Both of these trends are typical for those with a history of domestic violence convictions.

Camby Wilson, 22, was arrested in Augusta, Georgia in March 2022 for driving violations and was found to be in unlawful possession of a handgun. There were four bullets in the gun’s magazine. Wilson is not allowed to have a firearm due to a 2019 conviction in New York.

Wilson could be punished with up to ten years in prison and a fine of $250,000. Furthermore, he may be subject to up to three years of supervised release. After the United States Probation Office finishes its findings on the presentence inquiry, he will be sentenced. An eventual sentence will be decided by a federal district judge after taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other considerations specified by law.

This case was looked into by the Augusta Police Department and the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives).

School security guards and concealed carry on school grounds are two issues that could be debated by Maine lawmakers this year.

Rep. Steven Foster (R-Dexter) is behind a plan that would make it legal for some school employees to carry firearms on campus.

Employees of public or approved private schools would be excluded from the ban on owning or discharging firearms on school grounds or within 500 feet of schools under this proposal.

However, the worker would need to have fulfilled the certification and training requirements set forth by the Maine Criminal Justice Academy’s board of trustees. To process or discharge a firearm “to enhance the safety and security of the school and to defend students, employees, and members of the public on school premises,” the individual must be approved to do so by the school board.

A teacher or other school staff member need not be armed in the workplace unless they want to do so voluntarily.

There has been no movement toward holding a hearing on Foster’s bill.

Two additional bills’ text has not been made public yet.

Androscoggin Republican Senator Eric Brakey has introduced a bill with the working title An Act to Allow School Administrative Units to Establish Rules, Procedures, and Guidelines for Properly Trained Staff to Carry a Concealed Handgun on School Property While Acting in Their Official Capacity. Brakey had intended to introduce a different measure, but after reading Foster’s version, he has decided to back it.

Conclusion

A guy from New York pled guilty to possessing a firearm while being a felon in U.S. District Court in Bangor today.

Recently, a 37-year-old man living in Bangor was apprehended for having a handgun in his possession. An individual’s Second Amendment rights were being exercised here. But that person had a recent history of conviction for domestic violence, which makes that activity problematic.

It had been reported to the police that the suspect was armed. The cops arrived with a search warrant because of his history of domestic violence convictions. They made the arrest on weapons charges after discovering a firearm.

Statements given to police throughout the inquiry led to the filing of a second accusation against the defendant. This time for domestic violence terrorising.

Wilson could be punished with up to ten years in prison and a fine of $250,000. Furthermore, he may be subject to up to three years of supervised release. After the United States Probation Office finishes its findings on the presentence inquiry. He will be sentenced. An eventual sentence will be decided by a federal district judge after taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines. And other considerations specified by law.
