10 Artists Selected For Competition
“This ice sculpture competition highlights that synergy and the wonderful programming that has made the Island its home,” said Meredith Johnson, VP of Arts & Culture and Head Curator for the Trust. “”Governors Island has become a regional and national centre for the arts and creativity,” says the New York Times. A chainsaw ice carving is an unforgettable adventure. So we’re excited to have our artists and a curious audience join us for this unique event.
Late in 2022, Governors Island Arts and LMCC issued a design submission open call for New York City-based creatives. In this live, continuous ice sculpting session, the artists will bring to life the ten concepts chosen by a panel of New York City’s cultural heavy hitters. On the day of the event, Okamoto Studio will pair each chosen artist with one of their expert ice carvers. Tourists can watch the ice sculptors work live and then choose their favourite creation to win the “People’s Choice Award.”
