The birthday of Jose Marti is commemorated every year on January 28 in Cuba. On the occasion of his 1853 birthday, Cubans everywhere will be celebrating the life of the man many have called the Apostle of the Cuban Revolution.
After being exiled from Cuba in 1871, this revolutionary writer and politician spent much of his life abroad before returning to his homeland in 1895 to fight for Cuban independence.
Today, the day of his birth is celebrated all over Cuba, even though it is not a federal holiday and therefore most people do not get the day off.
Jose Mara’s Birthday Monument : A Historical Perspective
As the son of Spanish immigrants, José Julián Mart Pérez was born in Cuba. Mart’s love of writing began at a young age. Mart began publishing political satire plays that expressed his disdain for the Spanish Empire at a time when many of his contemporaries were devoted to academic pursuits.

The day he was arrested for penning a drama about the unjust exploitation of the Spanish Empire was the turning point in his life. Though he was forced into exile at the age of 18, Mart continued to write and publish works until the very end of his life.
He put his time in exile to good use by continuing his education in Spain. Four years after graduating with degrees in law and literature in 1874, Mart immersed himself in French and South American culture. Once again residing in Cuba, Mart did so in 1878.
However, he was denied entry to Cuba and instead travelled to Guatemala and Mexico. His travels and teaching were intertwined with his writing career. Mart took part in the revolution from his New York apartment by penning poems and speeches.

As a true patriot, channelled the frustration of his countrymen and turned it into effective strategies for victory. He was moved to pen verses that united people by America’s promise of freedom and independence.
Yet he also condemned the American government’s cooperation with the Spanish. Mart honed his writing skills across forms by sharing his thoughts in a wide variety of publications, including essays, articles, children’s magazines, and letters to his many admirers in Cuba.
Mart is largely remembered as a poet who chronicled the struggles of common Cubans during their rebellion against the Spanish colonisers. Beyond Cuba, the martyr has become a household name.
Cubans Celebrate Jose Amtri’s Birthday
Even though it isn’t a nationally recognised holiday, this is still celebrated with great fervour in Cuba. While many of the larger commemorations take place at the José Mart Memorial in Havana, Cuba, smaller memorial ceremonies undoubtedly take place at other memorials all over the country. Cubans celebrate the man they consider the “Apostle of the Cuban Revolution” on this special day.

Mart wrote in a variety of styles and addressed a wide range of issues, including warfare, peacekeeping, human rights, political philosophy, economic growth, ethnic violence, and interfaith understanding. His correspondence with others reflected the insights he recorded in his journals. He gave the revolution the power it needed with the stroke of a pen.
Honoring Jose Marti on the occasion of his 167th birthday
January 28 (RHC) – Havana This Tuesday, Cubans will commemorate the 167th anniversary of José Marti’s birth with a day of national mourning and celebration.

This memorial is an act of atonement for the desecration of hero statues in Havana, which were perpetrated by members of the Cuban-American ultra-right in South Florida.
Young people all over the country, including in Havana’s Revolution Square, will march in celebration of the holiday.
There will be two hours of commemorative programming on national television.
The celebrations kicked off on Monday night with the customary Torchlight March from the almost 300-year-old University of Havana to the Fragua Martiana.
The Memorial
Found at the former San Lázaro quarries, where young Mart toiled for months in 1870 after being sentenced to forced labour by the Spanish colonial regime.

Ral Castro, the first secretary of the Cuban Communist Party, Miguel Daz-Canel, the president of the Republic, and other top officials led the Torchlight March, which was attended by thousands of young people.
The event was one of many across the country commemorating Mart, a national hero who died on May 19, 1895 in Dos Ros, in the province of Oriented, after a life filled with accomplishments as a politician, writer, thinker, educator, journalist, and fighter. The first march in his honor was held in 1953, on the centennial of his birth.
