Jantar Mantar Protesters Said They Would Continue Wrestling Despite The Supreme Court’s Decision

On Thursday, the wrestlers stated the Supreme Court’s decision to end their case against WFI chairman Bhushan Sharan Singh for sexual harassment is not a defeat and that they would continue their protest.

Since April 23rd, the wrestlers have been on hunger strike sitting in protest, calling for the capture of Weightlifting Association of India (WFI) head Brij Bhushan over allegations of sexual harassment against seven female grapplers, one of whom is a juvenile.

Three female wrestlers have accused Brij Bhushan of sexual harassment; on Thursday, the Supreme Court dismissed their case, saying that FIRs had been filed and each of the seven complainants had been given enough protection.

Protesting Wrestlers Stayed Still At The Protest Location

The protests would continue, Olympic bronze medalist Sakshi Malik declared, despite the Supreme Court’s injunction. She went on to say that the Supreme Court’s ruling wasn’t a setback since “it done all it could to resolve this situation.”

The wrestlers said they’re will contact their superiors before making any further decisions. The decision would be made when we talk to the elders,” Vinesh Phogat added.

The attorneys for the wrestlers made an oral request that the continuing investigation be overseen by a retired or sitting high court judge, but the bench led by the Chief Justice D Y the Chandrachud denied their request.

You prayed specifically for the filing of a police report (FIR) and safety for the complainants when you arrived here. Both of your requests have been granted at this point.

The bench remarked, “If you have any additional complaints, you may very well petition the court of appeals or the jurisdiction magistrate.” This ended the proceedings for the time being.

The bench added that it is terminating the proceedings for the time being and that anybody with further complaints may go to the supreme court or the regional magistrate. Vinesh went on to say that the Delhi Police are actively working against us.

The Delhi Police are actively sabotaging our efforts. Vinesh said that “our supporters and others who are going to stand with us” were being prevented from doing so.

As we have said from the beginning, we support the peace demonstration. However, she cautioned that if the Delhi Police took drastic measures, they would be held accountable for any resulting harm to the public.

Wrestlers were prevented from entering the site by the Delhi Police as their fellow competitors staged a protest against WFI head Brij Bhushan and president Sharan Singh.

Police blocked the wrestlers from entering the protest location at Jantar Mantar as the Sakshi Malik, Vinesh has Phogat, & Bajrang Punia conducted a news conference there.
