Ryan Patrick Murphy, born in Indianapolis, Indiana, is an American writer, director, and producer best known for his work on the television series Nip/Tuck (2003), Glee (2009), and American Horror Story (2013). (2011). Both his mother, J. Andy Murphy, and his father, a newspaper circulation director, were writers and communicators. There is only one brother in his family.
He left his Catholic elementary school after the ninth grade to attend Warren Central High. In 1986, he interned in the fashion section of The Washington Post after studying journalism at Indiana University Bloomington, where he was also a member of a vocal ensemble.

Murphy’s “coming out” as gay occurred when he was 15 years old. Murphy’s first therapist concluded that he was “too precocious for his own good,” but that otherwise, Murphy was well.
