After completing her residency in 1982, Dr. Canady made history by becoming the first African-American female neurosurgeon. She says, “it never stopped to astonish me how joyful the children were”. Which is why she decided to specialize in pediatrics during her residency.

Dr. Canady maintained her affiliation with Wayne State University throughout her time at Children’s Hospital of Michigan. In addition to her work as a neurosurgeon, she taught at that institution. Her contributions paved the way for more women and minorities to pursue careers in surgery. Dr. Canady was a consultant and surgeon at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Florida, from 2001 until her retirement in 2012.
